I was taking with my buddy Dennis and he pointed out the fact that Kelly had intended to ride a 5'3" at pipe. In that article that LP linked Kelly makes this statement:
"...actually made four boards based on this design: a 5'3", which I rode in Micronesia last week in waves bigger than the Pipe Masters, and would have ridden in the contest if it didn't break; the 5'11" I rode in the contest, a 6'0" and a 6'6" that I rode at 10 to 12-foot Pipe on the day of the Eddie opening ceremonies, where I would have normally ridden a 7'2". "
A 5'3" board is shorter than an Inland Blue. Further along in that article, Kelly states:
"The most important thing is catching waves, but once you're on the wave, you want to be on the shortest board possible - guys are riding the biggest waves in the world on 5'6"s."
We don't have to paddle in. It will be interesting to see if design changes are made to shorter boards in the future.
The designs of boards for surf and wakesurfing are very different...mainly due to the fact of the strength of the wave or wake. I don't care how big of a wake your boat produces...it will still be fathoms (I like that adjective, I should use it more often ) weaker than your average beach break.
However the beauty of a boat wake is you can dial it in and ride till your legs turn to jelly.
But hats of to Kelly 9 time Champ at the age of 36??? And he wrapped up the title at Mundaka, with two events left on the tour. Freaking amazing.
