Joeprunc, those pictures really do look dark and dreary don't they? The forecast for the day was supposed to be sunny - but we didn't get much of it.

Tigeinaus, it's not quite as much speed as it is release and the ability to ollie like a skateboard. The pocket that we work with are pretty short in length, so these folks that boost aren't blasting up off the lip, what they do is bringing the nose up, by simultaneously pulling the front foot up and pushing down with the rear foot.

Once the nose is in the air, they sort of rotate the back of the board up using the front foot while sucking the rear foot up. There is a bit of spring/or twang, from the board, but mostly the speed is used to release the board from the water.

Another thing that is important, is having a firm lip. A well defined crisp lip is very important for these surf style boards that have a bit of inherent flex.

I'll try and find a sequence shot of James boosting to give you a better idea of the steps involved.

I think that Chase Hazen and James are probably the two best aerial'ists in the sport today. Their styles are a little different, but they both have much of the launch in common. If you watch these two young men, they both fade to the very back of the pocket, they seem to stage the start of their launch by judging when the curl of the pocket is just folding over their back leg.

James starts out high on the wake, his first small pump takes him up to the top of the wake and then he uses the slight downward trajectory to gain a bit of speed, but this has two effects for James, one is that he can typically only get two solid pumps in, also, James must do hard bottom turn up and into the wake.

In this sequence, which was all I had at the office, if you look at the trough in the face of the wake, you can see where James starts his pump into the aerial, and how he is lifting the nose, his back leg is fully extended and his front leg is pulling up. Sometimes, he actually loses contact with the board where his front foot is off the board fully.

Surfdad: Those pics are awesome. From the pic with you in the wetsuit I can see that you are still a closet goofeyfooter. It's okay to come clean on this board, we are all very open minded.

Thanks guys. LP you are too funny. We messed with the ballast a little yesterday, adding 240 pounds of lead under the sac, lowering taps to 1 and running at 11.2. It was a tad steep, but not bad.

The water though, Fast1911, took your breath away, it was so cold.

I think it is because he added 240 pounds of lead under the sack. At least that's what I assume based on his most recent post about two posts up.

Well, from what I can see, the locker is so full of fat sacs, it won't close.
