Yeah I know this one is a HOG. The build is a bit more detail because of the skins. It requires 3 pulls inside the bag. One for the rails, one for the bottom skin and then one for the top skin. The one pound foam is floppy, like a wet noodle and can't be shaped without the rails to offer some stiffness. Plus, there are two additional pulls in the bag for the exterior lamination. After the hotcoat, I could have surfed it, but I wanted to duplicate the construction of a surftech manufactured board.
The boards from the Cobra factory are molded and so don't have the time issue that I have without the mold. The Cobra folks load the mold up and when it comes out, it's ready for paint. Those boards are HIDEOUS looking straight from the mold. Then they shoot them with paint: primer, base color, rail color and finally the clear coat.
These paints are two part urethane and are SUPER HARD.
I'm just now entering the painting phase. Again, because I don't have a mold, the surface of my board requires some "body work". The final paint job will only look good if the surface or foundation I start with is smooth and "flat". So...tons of primer and tons of block sanding. No doubt there are folks familar with custom painting for cars and they can attest to how laborious a decent custom paint job is.
Hopefully I'll have it done before Spring!
