Can you help a brotha with his surf wake?

As I get older and fatter the time has come to surf more. That and I have a new boat partner that is interested in surfing, so I will have more opportunities to surf. I have a 04' 22V with 2 Fly High 250's and one Fly High 500 bags to use. We usually only have a couple of people in the boat, so I will have to get my weight from ballast.

When I put the 500 in the back drive locker on the port side and had about 500 lbs of folks on that same side, the wake had a good shape and height but was not long enough. I even put one of those guys in the front but it did not help. I think if I filled up a 250 or two in the bow it might help, just did not have time that day. I played around with speed at 11 - 12 and taps from 5 - 2 and the wake was always too short.

So my question is, what do you guys recomend, config wise, for my boat to have a nice, long, huge surf wake with only a few people in the boat? Can I do it with my sacs or do I need to buy more weight? I looked at the Enzo sack but the $519 price scared me away. I think I need more weight, just want to know where and how much. I do not have a ballast system, I fill my bags the old fashioned way with a hand held pump.

How much weight are you putting in the bow? You need to add weight to the front. Try like 500 up front, and like 400 in each locker. Then put people on side of surf, or another 500 on side of surf, either in the back, or on the seat as close to back and side as possible.

or 500 up front, 400 bag in each locker, and then get like pop bags for the extra LIST weight, and put like 500 of pop in the locker on side of surf.

That should give you a pretty good wake, and you should still be able to adjust taps to give you some variation in steep and length.

If you need to switch from reg to goofy, just move the pop bags, leave the water ballast in place.

For my 24Ve, on goofy, we go about 11.6 or so, for nice wake, and helps knock down the curl, on reg side, we have to go a bit slower to clean up the face, about 10.8 or so. If you slow down on the goofy side, the wave will get monstrous, but the curl is to big. Again, on my 24Ve.

Here with Whitney, she is at 11.6, and the curl is small, and so she can get back very far, and the curl doesn't pull her back.

And with t-bone, I slow down a bit for him, and the wave can sometimes look like its going to eat him, it gets big, but the curl is big, and gets in the way when you try to recover from a 3, or big slide, or whatever.

My boat's about like yours. Try the 500 in the rear locker and then another 500 on the seat as far forward as you can get it. You might need some straps to hold it in place (I strap mine to the tower leg). Also, try slowing it down. Anything faster than 11.2 is going to be too fast for your board. Don't worry too much about the looks of it...I'd focus on the energy behind the way. Start at about 9.5 Mph and work your way up from there.

I have an 04 22v also. So here is my set up. Depending on how many peeps on the boat I have the option of a 750 sac in the rear locker plus a 350# hard tank. So if I need it I can go 1100 in rear locker plus I have a 550 sac in the port front locker. More weight in the back and slower speeds produce huge wakes 4' plus high. Then with speed and taps I can fine tune and lengthen the wake sacrificing size for length. I always have the fron 550 full.

This is my wife at about 11mph and taps at 2 550 up front and 750 rear with 4 peeps in the boat.

Thanks for the info guys. Since I only have one 500 and two 250's to work with right now, I will try to fill the 250's, one on the port side seats and one in the port side front locker. I am going to try it out tomorrow, I will see how it goes. I may need to get a 750 for the back and then my 500 for the front, they have a 750 on sale for 99$ on boardersmall.com.

hJust had a thought, Has anyone ever put ballast in the storage under the windshield? I might try that too, that would put those 250's out of the way while still putting the weight on the port side. I may try that too.

OK, tried putting the 500 in the back locker and one 250 on the floor and one under the dash. Wake was just not long enough no matter how much I fiddled with the taps and speed, the sweet spot was just to close to the platform, I kept bumping it. Going to buy that 750 and try your suggestions, hopefully that will do it. Thanks again.

Oh yeah, have you guys ever stacked one sac on top of another sac? Or put another way, can I put a 250 on top of a 750 in the back locker? I understand there is some risk of bursting the seams on the 750, but with a new sac I bet it could handle it?

Yep, you can definitely stack them. We used to run 2 450's in one locker and it creates a very tall and steep wave but a short pocket.

I stack a 400 (only fills about 300-350) on top of my 700 for surfing and fill the bow sac.

Thanks for the stacking info, that will help too. About to order the 750 right now.

Dog - i was going between 10 and 13 and playing with the taps the whole time. Looking at the wake at 12 with the taps at one it definetely did get shorter and longer, but when I tried to surf it I had the same issue, the sweet spot put me really close to the platform.

I will say that my technique is probably not helping and I have a 05' liquid force skimskate, which is a smaller board.

That board should float you, but you might want to try a bigger board if you're just learning. The real trick is to get your center of gravity over your feet and put pressure on the balls of your feet.

Are you around next week? If so, maybe we can go out with my younger son. He's pretty good at coaching people. He can also ride just about anything. We can't do it this week 'cuz he has a wakeboard competition in Dallas this weekend and hasn't practiced in 3 weeks

I keep my boat in town during the week, so we could either use yours or mine.
