    Red rails

I molded some 5 pound polyurethane railes and glued them to a 1.5# eps core using perimeter stringers. Eventually I'll shape the rails to a more desirable outline.

The concept with the heavier rail material is to provide a better wave set and in combination with the perimeter stringers, less rail twist off.

When I mixed up the pour foam I added the red dye to color the material all the way through. When I am done with the shaping, it will still be red in color.

I want to see the finished product also.

Are you planning to bring that board up and auction it during July 19th? I am sure you will be a few bids on it. j/k

Seriously, nice work...I wish I had time for this hobby. I am learning a lot, so keep it up

No Larry, I will never do this in any production environment. I'm not sure if you guys have this - but there are things I love to do, building boards is one, if I had to deal with the demands of customers or only build what sold, it wouldn't be fun any more. As it is now...I can crank out a HORRIBLE POS board and laugh about it next week.

da.bell keep your fingers crossed - I got a check from the insurance company yesterday for 9,500 and change. I might have my boat back next week! YES!

Samw and Timmy! thanks guys - it'll be an interesting board when it's finished, I hope to do a rought cut of the outline tonight so that it LOOKS like something This year...10 boards built and finished. I have 2 that just aren't worth completing so are relegated to act as shelves

Yeah dog, I make 80% of my revenue in 3.5 months - damn IRS. I took Tuesday off and James and I went down to Santa Cruz to visit a few shapers and then hit Hollister Hills for some dirt biking. Life is good! (especially now that I have that insurance check! )

Just let me know. Still want you to come up even if you don't have your boat. I am sure we can put some ballast into my 24Ve to make one awesome surf wake if need be.

I rough shaped the blank this evening. For those that haven't shaped before polyurethane is so much easier to shape. The foam is finer and sands and cuts much easier than EPS which has tends to have pukas or chunks that pull put. The rails on a typical board have the most shaping done, so having the polyu there made shaping this a dream.

I have heard folks talk about pour foam leaving all sorts of voids in the interior, but I didn't experience any of that. It could be the foam from smooth-on, or the process I went through. The directions suggest shaking each component a and b side, but then also suggest separately mixing the part b component. I added the dye and then "stirred" that with a hamster wheel mixer for 1 minute.

A cross section of the foam I cut.

Conventional surfboard construction has always weighted the rails by virture of the rails laps (overlapping fiberglass from the top and bottom on the rails adds some extra weight and stiffness in this area). This concept, furthers that, plus adds ease of rail shaping.
