Futures has the cant built in to the fin I believe its 6 degrees. We have a set of Simitar fins that start at 6 degrees and finish at 18 degrees cant. You can install the fin boxes at different angles of cant but its a pain.
I've never tried a different left vs right fin set up (on purpose ) but as you surmize I'm sure that there is a "best" configuration. There are a number of fin boxes that have some limited adjustment - but the GRANDDADDY for asjustments is 4 way adjustable fin systems. They allow adjustments for toe-in, cant, fore and aft and something else I can't remember the last adjustment now.
The fin manufacturers seem to have done a ton of research, but I'd love to see the data from a tank test.
