Depends on where you do it. At 65', there's not much of a surf wake. It was the pre-cursor to the modern wakeboard.

Don't get me wrong, you can pretty much right anything with a rope and usually whatever length you want...my kids have proven that. The only thing they tried that didn't work was a skateboard deck. A few years ago we used the skimboards you normally use at the beach.

However, you won't be dropping the rope at that distance. You'll need a wake with a lot more incline. Mine is typically 3'-4-' and almost falling over. That would be hard to achieve at 40' unless you had some sort of trawler hull design. A tugboat might work, too.

We have friends that live on the Isle of Jersey of the coast of France. The island has several tugboats that move ships around...anyway...our friends talked to the tug operator and he said - you can't TOUCH our tug, but if you can tow-in to it, they didn't mind them surfing the wake. So the scene is that they have an inboard they line ride behind and then get close to the tug's wake, the rider whips into it and they ride that around the island. It's supposed to be huge and long.

We've done the line ride at 20mph. Great fun, but you can't free surf. Well...I take that back...you can whip out into the flats and drop the rope at what feels like 30mph - the boards hum and make weird noises at that speed and you can make these HUGE turns.

                I'll try and find pictures.

That's how we got started on surfing...one of the bindings came off. So, I took both off, loaded up the ballast and the the kids have some fun. It won't free surf, tho.
