Removing Wax

I have an 8' surfboard that I want to remove the wax and add some grip tape. I have most of the wax removed but still have a thin wax film left. What is the best way to remove the wax film? I have heard laquer thinner but afraid it will affect the surface of the board.

You can try PPG wax & Grease remover, usually available at an automotive paint retailer.

Somebody told me to use wax paper or saran wrap, lay it on rub and lift it off. Don't know if it works but hey try it.

Maybe he's using the foam grip tape....like that comes on others!

I actually have too much hair on my chest. I need the grip tape to sand it back a bit... j/k

I am actually using something called gator foam or something like that which is the same material that is used for the seats on a Skyski(hydrofoil).

I use it mostly for wakesurfing, just got tired of the melted wax in the boat.

That's what I was hoping you meant. You're talking about Gator Grip, right? That stuff should work really well. I thought you were talking about skateboard grip tape which would have sucked IMO.

And ya, melted wax on the boat is no bueno, you'll love the Gator Grip!

Before we switched over to EVA foam we used wax frequently. I've used mineral spirits to remove the old wax and never noticed any degredation of the hot coat. I always washed it up with soap and water also.

I'm with you, the wax is a mess.

I finally got around to asking my friend who repairs fiberglass surfboards for a living about this. He said absolutely use lacquer thinner.
