With all due respect - in CA, the folks hanging all over is seriously illegal. Even the @ 3,400 pounds would be illegal here. I worry about things like this "observation" in Oregon:
I would worry more about the 2K of water ballast if it wasn't neutrally buoyant. I don't run any lead as of right now.
That wake looks good but honestly it is hard to tell what it looks like.
I was also going to say something about all the people in the above pictures sitting on the sundeck while underway. We would get pulled over in a second if we did that in Missouri or Kansas.
The only problem in my book with the 24ve is that is does require a lot of weight to produce a great wakeboarding wake in my opinion. It does not however need the 2K + 9 people for a great surf wake, it is just way too much fun when it happens though!!
"The operator of the boat is responsible for damage caused by the wake, including damage to boats, docks or injury to persons."
Tell that to the a-holes with the 65 foot yachts on lake of the ozarks that cruise by at 20MPH with a 10 foot wake. There are so many large boats on lake of the ozarks that it would be laughable to say anything about wakeboarding boats.
Now, I do agree that that picture looks pretty excessive. But I did ask our ranger on Lake Oroville. He said the law about people sitting on the gunnels or sun pad, was only illegal if the boat is ON PLANE. I mentioned that surfing is def done NOT ON PLANE and he said that should be ok, but use common sense, and make sure you are not on plane.
Lead def scares me, we have been able to make a great wake, with 1000-1500 in ballast, staying under guidelines.
I don't think I have ANY pictures where folks aren't ripping the wake up. Can't remeber this kids name - pro surfer sponsored by bodyglove and mobgroup.
I think the point though isn't what you and I think, it's the operation of the boat that causes OTHERS to get irritated or operating a boat with folks hanging all over...we are just asking for trouble and like you point out...it isn't necessary to surf.
Although...I haven't see a good clear surf wake on the 24Ve without a ton of ballast.
OOPS! I did find one of Chase Hazen...so I do have a clean face picture
The law says "Underway". He said "On Plane". So maybe it is a bit vague, dunnow.
No person shall operate any vessel or manipulate any water skis, aquaplane,
or similar device in a reckless or negligent manner so as to endanger the life,
limb, or property of any person. Examples of such operation include, but are
not limited to:
1. Riding on the bow, gunwale, or transom of a vessel under way, propelled
by machinery, when such position is not protected by railing or other
reasonable deterrent to falling overboard; or riding in a position or
manner which is obviously dangerous. These provisions shall not apply
to a vessel’s crew in the act of anchoring, mooring or making fast to
a dock or another vessel, or in the necessary management of a sail.
2. Maneuvering towed skiers, or devices, so as to pass the towline over
another vessel or its skier.
3. Navigating a vessel, skis, or other devices between a towing vessel and
its tow or tows.
4. Operating under the influence of intoxicants or narcotics.
Hey Ragboy - both CA and CO CO as in Carbon Mononxide. I thought at the beginning of '07 when we got those CO regs that you couldn't have anyone on the sunpad with the engine on and I've always understood the "underway" to mean moving. Our Sheriff's Deputy must be hardcore.

Ok, that was taken in Texas. I was the one sitting on the gunwhale briefly to take the second picture. I merely posted to give you guys an idea of where weight distribution was for that wake on a 22 Ve.
I wouldn't normally run with that set-up. The most I ever have on my sundeck is 1 person to assist the rider with the rope. They're usually holding onto the cleat right there. This is important because if the rider drops the rope and it doesn't quite make it into the boat, it's a hazard. And, yes, we always use a wakesurf rope.
I would like to point out that I've never been ticketed, but I have had a couple of lake patrol guys ask me about my exhaust. They were more worried about the carbon monoxide issue than anything else.
I do get the point about the damage my wake can cause, which is why we're doing this in the middle of the lake away from others.
To akdocs point, who's regulating the moronic tubers who insist on encircling my boat to the point where I'm taking on water? This, by the way, is highly illegal in Texas.
