    New Board Battle

    Message to Surfdad:

I am in the market for a new board and after reading just about every post that you have on here, and a few on wake world, I have decided to go against the "Big 3" and get a real board. I have the Hyperlie Broadcast 5'6" and it was a great board to learn on, and is still great for my parents, but I need a board that is going to allow me to progress. I think I have narrowed it down to Walzer and Walker Project. These are both "custom" board manufacturers, right? I was just wondering what you would recommend for me. I am going to be taking delivery of my '07 22Vé soon so I want a new board!

    Here are some specs:

    Boat:
    '07 22Vé w/ factory 900lb ballast

    Me:
20 years old (I figure age matters too)
    a shade over 6' tall
    approx 170 lbs
    Goofy surf/skim style

Goals for the summer w/ new board:
    -Big air
    -Lip slides
    -Surface 3
    -180 Air
    -Shuvit

Oh and I wakeboard, surf, and skate (longboard) so I have pretty good board control. I would consider myself "Intermediate" in that I can throw surface 3's (w/ the rope on my Broadcast) and surf (no rope) w/ pretty much any board behind my old '95 Tige 2002fslm Tournament Ski Boat w/ a 1200lb Sofa in the back. Also have you heard anything about the new Liquid Force Custom yet? I remember you saying you thought it was a big step for the Big 3.

Thanks for any help/suggestions you can provide!
    Greg

I asked Greg to post this in a public forum because many of the questions that he has will prove useful to most folks contemplating a board purchase.

Your weight puts you in the ballpark for just about any of the performance boards. That opens up quite a few options. However, there is one defining trick that will really make or break your decision. You list wanting to do a shuv as one of your goals for this summer. That's the deal breaker in all of this.

When you are first learning a shuv, you need as much stability as possible. The pintail offers a great deal of stability, as it allows the tail to sit lower in the water. When you are riding the board revert (tail first), you'll want a nose with a pin shape. Phase 5, Walker Project Composite X 4.5, Walzer Pro Skim and the Inland 4skim all offer this shape. Now, you'll notice that I excluded the Walzer Alpha (it's the shape that Nick has). The reason is that the Walzer Alpha is a twin fin. When the board is ridden revert (backwards) as in after the first Shuv, the fin closest to the wake will grab and wake and tend to spin the board around. The Alpha can be shuv'ed, don't misunderstand but it makes the learning process considerably harder.

So our first step in this board selection process is to look at HOW you want to ride and the tricks you want to learn. If the shuv is high on the priority list, then that will affect your choice.

So...is the shuv a HUGE consideration?

SPEAKING OF GETTING NEW BOARDS THINK I NEW A ONE OR JUST GIVE UP ON SURFING WITH OUT THE ROPE...I HAVE THE HL BRODCAST 5'-6" AND LAST WEEKEND IN OUR 24V WE HAD AROUND 800LBS IN THE BACK AND ABOUT 400 UP FRONT AND STILL I CAN'T HOLD THE POCKET. I'M 6'-8" AND AROUND 260 LBS AND WE HAVE TRIED EVERY SPEED AND TAPS SET UP WE CAN THINK OF..... I THINK I NEED A 10' LONG BOARD OR MAYBE I JUST SUCK AT SURFING

G-money, that avatar isn't a picture of you?! I am so disappointed now! Wakesurfing shouldn't be hard. If you're struggling, either the wake is inadequate or the board is. You sound like you have a little bit of both. Also, until you have your surf legs, it can be hard feel to the sweet spot. When I first started about 5 or so years ago I couldn't ride anything less than a 5'10".

IMO, the practical weight limit for a 5'6" board is about 220, about 200 for a newbie.

Diagnosing a "staying with the pocket" problem, these are the steps I take:

Remember, wakesurfing shouldn't be a struggle.

            1) Adequate wake, as evidenced by a clean face.

            2) Get a bigger board

Funny that you ask Surfdad.. I put the shuv on the list because I can do shuv's on a skateboard so I thought it would be cool to try them on water too. Honestly, I would put all the other tricks before a shuv so the shuv is NOT that important to me. I take it this opens up a whole new can of worms...

I've only ridden my Walzer Alpha (I guess, now?) once, but I did spend some time riding revert. I was really surprised by the stability. Also didn't have a problem with the fins dragging. That could just be my wake, or lack there of. Definitely need some more time on it before I can really speak of the performance, but it made me happy in all aspects.

                            G-money,

I have a 24V and put 1400 pounds or so on one side to get a decent wake. I think you need more weight. That will make your wake mo' betta!

I weigh 230 pounds, and if I don't have that much weight, I find it difficult to stay in the pocket.

I use the hyperlite broadcast 5'6'' and find it to be a terrific board to learn on. I would keep it, and buy more weight.
                            Be excellent to one another.
