So I tested my suck gate today. The aluminum handle was the bomb. However my results were mixed. With zero ballast it made a nice wave. When I filled all ballast (800 front and 2600 rear) the boat was very nose high. The wave was very washed out.

I tried a variety of speeds and moving people to the front but it never cleaned up. I started taking weight out and I pretty much drained the off side before it cleaned up. But really that is how I ran it before the gate also.

Thoughts? How do you weight your boat with a gate! What about taps?

      Aftermarket Surf Gate

Generally speaking it Seems like a little list and less nose is the ticket with theses gates.

      And speed up a little.

I don't know if it is different on the 2016+ hill bit when we had our G23 we got the best wave with a little list when using NSS. We would have the Surfside heavier by 300-400 lbs. This seems to be the norm for NSS equipped boats. I wonder of its the same for Malibu gate boats. If so, it's a clear indication that a slight list is still needed to produce the best wave.

I found that when I listed the boat normally the gate cleaned up the wave a bit. Typically I still would require bodies on the surf side but this negated that requirement.

When I load all that rear ballast it is hard to get the nose down.

Optimal angle is between 7-8 degrees...what you at?

i was just out using my homemade sucgate today and if worked good at slower speeds on the starboard side for the kids but the consensus is still better listed. lots better!!! I had the hard tanks full, 1200 full and the starboard 1/2 to 3/4 full and my wife said nope, still way better listed. I didn't try it so next time out I will try and see.

Are you asking for front /rear or lefr/right?

Where did you have your gate? I run mine full surf like you, 400#offside, maybe 200#ish in bow. I have the Delta as far back with the cups forward and the tab back just under the step on the hull. My wave got way longer and smoother with tons more push. We run 11.8-12 with only 2 people in the boat. When I tried the suc gate on the upper panel it was terrible.

I ran it like yours, below the step and rearward, its 7"x9" and angled back about 10deg, maybe I had too much weight with the 1200lb er and the hard tanks, I only filled off side bout 1/2 or just over.I looked nice, next time I will try it. I am all about getting a longer wave. I haven't given up yet, just hasn't been better than listed yet.

We run ours above the step

If I run above the step the rooster tail is 5' tall and wave is washed out, it's only just in the water an inch or two

To answer your question, I was running about 5.5 deg at rest and 8 deg at 12MPH. This was for surfing normal side.

I found the suck gate helped account for the smaller crew we were running with. It didn't seem to matter where people sat.

well we went out today and it was so choppy and lots of surf boats I did not feel comfortable having the big list going on. so I first set up the sucgate for the kids goofy side had all factory tanks full, goofy rear locker full, prop 8-900lbs and then the surf sac half full on the port side. The wave was terrible, emptied the surf sac on the port side and wave got good for them, real clean. Now my turn, all factory, goofy side surf sac 1/2 full ish, and then the port 1200lb er full. tried 11.2 - 11.6, and taps 3-6, I have to say the transition near the boat was good and the wave felt harder than when listed at the same speed, when listed I run 12 and then its as hard.

The big problem I have is there is a distinct cut in the wave 1/2 way up that really ruins the wave, thats why I tried diff. speeds, taps, I even moved the sucgate forward on the boat. Nothing would get rid of that line in the wave. For a day like today with a 2' chop and rollers from others surfing being more level was nice for sure, but this sucgate is not competing against a listed wave yet.

Anyone have any other ideas, what am I missing, I am sure I have enough weight, too much? rrrrrr

Are you running bow weight? If so dump it. On the goofy side I run surf side rear 1000 lbs, 350-400 off side, no bow, taps at 5 speed at 11.8. Reverse on the regular side. I run the mission in reverse above the step in the hull.

I have been running bow weight and also running the gate below the step. I will have to see if it will fit above the step next time. Thanks
