    Opinion needed on new board

I also posted this on Wake9, so I apologize if you have already seen it.

Im a tall guy, 235lbs, and I'm looking for a board that will fit me. I would say I'm a solid beginner, and want something that I can grow with (and not just go in a straight line behind the boat). I have an '06 22ve with custom ballast, so the wave is great. My #1 choice is a Shred Stixx Ringer XL, its supposed to be good for guys up to 300lbs, is light, and is able to carve with ease. The 750 USD price tag is a little steep for me though, since I'm a little strapped for cash. I have a few other options in my price range though.

2014 Ronix Carbon Thruster 5'1" used for 400USD
2013? Island Surfer Red Rocket used for 430USD
    2013? Phase 5 Diamond Drew 58" used for 400USD

A few questions. I know the Island Surfer is probably the best board, but Ive heard its kind of big and bulky and harder to turn. For those of you that have the Ronix, Will the Thruster in the 5'1" be a big enough board for a 235lb guy? I can't seem to find the weight recommendations for this board. Any other thoughts or ideas? Im trying to keep the price in that 400 usd range (I know I know, but I spent all my money on the boat...)

If anybody has a used Ringer XL, I'd love to take it off your hands.

I would suggest either the ronix or the inland surfer. Probably more towards the red rocket.

As you progress and get more comfortable get yourself a nice custom board tailored for your ride style and wave!

That looks like Corsons handy work. Definitely a fantastic idea and great way to go! My buddy just bought a custom off him and was super pleased with it!

No experience with the other boards, but I am 225, 6'2" and I found the Red Rocket just didn't feel very responsive at all. My wife has a LF sweet spot pro which she loves, but I always felt a little overweight for the board and was pearling it constantly.

I ended up buying a Soulcraft Bluntnose Honu and have been very happy so far, but it is more expensive than the options you are putting out there.

I am really glad you have had a good response from the Soulcraft! This is why our school represents them in the PNW here. Amazing ride!

I on the other hand attribute my early success to the Red Rocket's decent speed and mildly assertive nature. I can carve it up and down the wave and have a pretty darned good time. Perhaps I have not been on a "responsive" board yet, but I seem to be able to put it anywhere I want to....I first started on a Liquid Force Fish 5.6 which was a complete waste of $220. Incredibly slow compared to the Red Rocket; the learning really begun once I ditched that board.

So funny, I wish we all could just have a buffet to sample, but that is not the way it works. Unfortunately. Shoot I surf on Okoboji, IA, so selection is very limited.

I am really drawn to the Ringer XL, but for no really practical reason. I was just told it is much faster than the Red Rocket, and much more maneuverable. I have communicated with that company--directly with Nick. Duffy vouched for them, and he has been a solid boat forum friend to me thus far. I also have heard great things concerning that company, and I see them widely represented by very skilled guys. But I know there are many many options that are awesome. Very tough to decide.

Short summary, I like my Red Rocket. Super fun to ride. We are up to 7 adults that have learned on it thus far. I can't wait to ride these that are purportedly so much better!

Was it Anthony that bought the red/orange board? I was out with him on Sunday when he bought it. And Corson builds amazing boards!

I have heard this as well. Faster, shorter, lighter, easier to turn and more agile. Still rated for the heavier guys as well. Its hard to find very many people that have actually surfed on one though. Theres not very many reviews of this board out there like other boards.

Ive heard good things about the "ringer" (not the XL version), Im just a little nervous it will be too small for me though. I have heard guys that weigh 220lbs surf the board with no problems. Maybe I should try to shed some of my natural "ballast" lol.

Does anybody have the 5'1" carbon thruster? Im really curious if that board would be big enough for 235 lbs.

I just ordered a Soulcraft Honu. He did a custom rocker on the nose for me because I tend to dunk the nose of every board I ride in order to gain the necessary speed to move my fat butt. It is a 4'10". I rode a Honu before and it was the best thing I ever tried.

I haven't ridden the other boards you mentioned but a lot of people said the Carbon Thruster was extremely fast when it was the topic of conversation last year. I almost bought one but got suckered in to a Trident instead (yuck). It looks nice on the wall.

I rode a Ringer (not XL) at Polar Bear a couple years ago. Loved the board!

My only fear with a Carbon thruster is that it has a pronounced nose rocker. Sometimes that nose rocker can turn into a plow. That being said, 5'1" would be considered on the big side for a wakesurfer so my guess is that it would work for you.

I would be bet that a 4'10" Ringer would be fine for your weight but the 4'8" Carbon Thruster would be too small. If you are looking at the Carbon Thruster at $700 vs a Chaos Ringer or Bamboo Ringer Xl at 750-800, I would go with the Chaos board every time. The Carbon Thruster has its place but only if you are paying $400 for the previous year's model IMHO.

Talk to Nick at Chaos. I bet he would be able to let you know what board would be enough for you in his lineup.

Also, most of the good custom boards use Futures fin boxes (Chaos, Soul Craft, Doomswell, The Walker Project all use futures, Ronix and Triple X use FCS fin boxes). At some point you might want to experiment with fins and it would be nice to have all futures fin box boards.

I actually sold my Carbon Thruster and Triple X board because I wanted to have all futures fin boxes.

Yeah, the only reason Im looking at the thruster is because I found last years model for $400. If I was going to pay full price for a thruster I would go right into the Ringer XL instead. But 750 bucks is a little more than Im allowed to spend, plus with the exchange rate it makes it even worse. So far, I can get a red rocket for $400 or a carbon thruster for $400, not sure which board to go with. I Know the red rocket is big enough board for me, the thruster may be more agile though...

It all depends on how many times you are going to spend $400 until you get a board that works for you *shrugs*
