I did want to pass along a few things that we learned from this contest. One is that you can create a reasonable surf wake in less than 10 feet of water. As Nick pointed out, bow weighting is significant and you can't ignore it. Also, there is a point of diminishing returns when adding ballast, but that point comes much quicker in shallow depths.
LONGER boats - 23+ feet long outperform shorter boats when developing wakes in shallow depths. Also, aftermarket devices such as Wakezup Switchblade are effective at increasing wake size, if limiting pocket length in shallow depths.
WAKEBOARDING folks, don't particularly care for wakesurfers. Apparently we are respectful with our riding or wake making. This tells me that there are at least SOME wakesurfers that aren't acting in a responsible manner. This is important for folks that wish to grow the sport in a competitive environment, because the current reigning administration is no doubt comprised of wakeboard or wakeboard friendly folks. If they come to the table even a LITTLE prejudical to wakesurfing, it makes it hard to overcome.
The way we are riding and setting up contests is, inadvertantly limiting many folks riding skills. Virtually NO ONE makes an effort to ride backside, OR ride switch. This is common in wakeboarding and wakeskating, but wakesurfing becomes very one dimensional.
The sport is NOT spectator friendly. We tested a video link at the Minnesota contest and again in Ohio. It brings the action to the shore, but...requires folks to sit in a specific location to see the screen. It worked pretty well in MN, because there was a patio with shade and food and beverage service, so people could be comfortable AND see the action via TV. At the NorCal Event, most folks are spread along the course and so a video presentation doesn't develop interest.Buy my kid's board! http://www.flyboywakesurf.com
