    Z1 Wakesurfing (no ballast)

There were a couple of good threads on here that gave me some hints on where to set the speed and taps for a good surf wake (Z1 Surf Wake, Z1 Weighting; however, there was not much in regards to a NON-ballast Z1 wake so I thought I would share my initial results from last weekend.

In only the second time surfing with the new boat (2010 Z1 no ballast) and only my third time surfing ever, I was able to go ropeless and I think we had the ballast-less wake pretty dialed in. We had speed at 10mph, Taps 6, 5 people in the boat (4 on surfer side, 1 on other, no one in bow, avg. 160 lbs), and with a slight pull to the left with the boat. Oh and I'm goofy foot. Picture doesn't do the wake justice, but I was pretty excited to be able to run ropeless! With regular foot rider, wake was much cleaner on other side when everyone moved to that side. I might have to learn to ride regular. I can see this is going to get addicting...

Here was another "Z1 surf thread" that helped...

        Z1 Surf Wake

Just trying to consolidate all these threads to one place, so the next guy discovering his Z1 doesn't have to look all over.

Thanks guys; like some others have said in previous posts, the wake on the other side seemed much more "naturally" cleaner. The wake on the goofy side was tough to rid of all the wash. They were roughly the same height, but top of wake was clearly different. Must be due to prop rotation.

That's awesome Justin! Are you planning on getting any ballast?

Get that one person from the opposite side back on the surf side. Bet it'll be a little bit better...
              Waiting for another good one!

I might try to get through this summer without adding anything, but I'm sure in the years to come there will be interest. The guy we bought it from said it was "pre-wired" for ballast. Must mean that there is wiring to control the pumps hopefully all the way to the dash.

What would be a good starter setup of ballast? (<1,000 lbs)

Interesting enough we tried that, but I had a harder time holding inside the pocket when everyone was on the same side. Maybe it's because the wake got too short & steep. We definitely still have some more experimenting to do.

                  Hooray to the weekend!!!

For 3 years we just ran with a pair of the v-drive sacs and a manual fill tsunami pump. It will make a world of difference for under $300. You can probably fit both sacs in the locker and get 700 lbs or so on one side depending how full you can get that 2nd sac. Here are some examples, not sure what fits in the Z1 lockers: http://www.wakemakers.com/wakeboard-...d-ballast-kits You can also hit up Chpthrill or WWS too.

X2. We ran manual sacks for 1.5 seasons and they were awesome. Night and day difference.

What about the "V-Drive 750 Ballast Package" with only one sac from the link? Little larger so would have to check dimensions. You mention two sacs that would both be placed on the surf side or in separate lockers? Did you have any other sacs on board to lengthen the wake?

Maybe this is what you're referring to for two sacs (400 lbs each) for 800 lbs total...

Fly High Pro X V-Drive Sacs

With a $100 pump, would be right at $300...not too bad (or $289 from the link you sent me...Direct Drive Wakeboard 800 Ballast Package)

Those are the sacs that we got first (and still use). I mentioned the 2 sacs because if you want to use them for wakeboarding you can just put one in each locker and you are good to go. If the 750 fits, that will be an easier setup.

Very tempting, thanks. I shall wait a couple of weeks and see how surfing progresses. Maybe an early x-mas present to myself
