Y, can you believe that wake had plenty of push, and I was NOT in the boat? So much for the theory you need me in the boat to make a wake. The wake did get ugly, but that is just because everyone got excited and stood up across the back, and when you move weight to opposite side, it starts to was out like that. The wake is still there, just dirty.

So I tried again several times yesterday, but after 3 attempt, it didn't feel right, the board wasn't raising me up out of the water. I waited fro the board to come up, and I couldn't find it, it was literally under water for about 30 seconds, then finally came up. I could see why, it had become water logged and warped. It looked like a corkscrew. I tried one more time, and it was obvious it was not going to work. But we are going to make another and seal it, and I will get up and throw the rope, and I can't wait.

I'm sorry if I mislead you Ewok - it has fins - crappy little 1" wakeboard fins on the rails and a waterski fin as a trailer Not an optimum configuration. Mostly this prototype was an experiment to see if it would allow Robert to get up on the surface and sort of a best guess on the shape - 30" wide is REALLY wide. Dennis had to hack the nose down a little bit after the first test run.

Now that we know that bouyancy really is a hinderance to Robert in this situation, the final board can be made - with some legit FINS.

That plywood is .705 thick, so the futures rail fin boxes will be too deep. Might make sense to use FCS plugs or possibly the futures 1/2 trailer boxes set up as a thruster.

The easiest thing would be to put some long 2 screw wakeboard style surf fins on there.

Hyperlite used to make 4.5" fins that they put on there landlock boards, but I think they stopped making them.

The longest 2 screw wakeboard style surf fins I have come across currently sold online is the Ronix 3.5"

The board I rode, had 3 fins. The 3rd center fin looked like an old fin from a wood single ski. Large, cast aluminum. I think Dennis put that on.

That was awesome! Jeff are you going to add a little more rocker in the next board, or narrow the nose? It looked like Dennis had issues with the heal side nose dipping into the water, and you could see the same with Rob.

I know you are working with plywood so more nose rocker would be quite difficult to acquire, and the surface area is needed to help plane. You did a great job going outside the box in designing a board for Robert. Most would think you need more foam to get up.


After many surf trips all over South and Central America...I'm done with FCS, I've ripped out too many plugs which lead to tail cancer. I am not a shaper by any means (maybe my shaper wasn't setting the plugs properly), but I know I've ruined quite a few boards and moved on.

I hear 'ya on the fcs plugs. They are just just shallower than the 3/4 rail boxes for the Futures. OR like jdj suggests, buy some deep wakeboard fins - those are just a drill thru and not routed in.

I think that Robert's dad is going to be building out the next one, he's a master craftsman! Plus, we have the design and the recipe, so it should be a quick build.

Yeah, the rocker was a challenge, it has some from the home depot stack and then Dennis tried to bend some additional in, but it needs more. I've seen it steamed and bent and also, a small strip screwed to the deck while the rocker is bent, might do the trick, also.

I want to build myself a hollow chambered balsa board and that has me thinking about that for Robert. The idea is you take boards and spot glue them on edge to the desired width. So you can imagine a glued block of 2x4's would need like 11 to span a 20" width. Then rough shape the outline and rocker. Break the segments apart and drill holes and cut chambers to lighten the board up and glue everything back together for final shaping. Tons of work, but if you left out the chambering, you coulod create a really sweet redwood board for Robert.
