    Board Questions

Yesterday I got to try out a 4'8" Grindwater Slaysh and was really dissapointed. I normally ride a 2004 HL Broadcast, which is also 4'8". The Slaysh felt like I was riding with flat tires and dragging an anchor. It took so much effort to stay in the pocket that I wasn't able to do anything else. After giving it a good ten minutes of riding I swapped it out for the Broadcast and was immediately able to cut, stall, drop back and spin a few 3s again.

Is this just how these surf style boards ride? Do I need to change the way I ride or wake?

No that is not how a "good" surfstyle board rides.

is that board a tri fin?? IF it is, try taking out the middle fin. should speed it up a little.

This is from my limited experience. With 700# in my locker, the HL Broadcast (have same board) is super easy to ride and play around with. My Shred Stixx JaMako (surf style) felt sluggish and more work to keep in the pocket. I experienced the same thing. I will say that the surf style still "turned" or "cut" better...the HL seemed like it skims or slides into turns. I now have 1250# in my locker. The surf style is a rocket and I fell like I have to hold it back a bit. I may be way off here, but from my limited experience it seems ballast and wake makes a world of difference...

Do you still prefer the Broadcast now that the wake is bigger? Or is this a moot point (didn't that board take a wallop?).

Something strange about the Grindwater boards is that they perform 100 times better with the fins backwards. We have a grindwater shaka and someone came up to us asking if we put our fins on backwards. We ofcourse hadn't taken the fins off since they were put on in the shop where we bought it so we thought it was a simple mistake. When my son tried to ride right after it was nearly impossible, so we switched the fins and the board performed well. Hopefully you can try this and see if it makes a difference. Happy surfing.

My buddy ordered the Slaysh and he brought it over to my house and after looking at it compared to my 07.5 Inland Yellow Loogey, he boxed it up and sent it back. Those fins are too short to give you any speed at all IMO.

I just had the same experience this weekend. It was my first time on a surf style board and it was slow. I played a bit with the wake but didn't get it to where I felt that board had any speed.

Wish I had read this yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bought a new Grindwater Slaysh. I would go a step further to say that it feels like it has SQUARE tires. It is almost impossible to get it to go forward. Am going to try some longer fins to see if that works and if not it is going back.

lol.. I just bought a Shaka yesterday.
Good thing to know about putting the fins in backwards. We hav ebeen riding a 4'4" HL Coex with a 1" fin. It was like ice skating.... very slippery.
So this monkey walks into a bar...
