    filling underside of swim platform

SO I was hijacking the teak platform thread with comments directed to filling the underside of a fiberglass platform. Rude of me -- sorry So, new thread.

Even with the 2009 revision, the platform can cut into the wake under a heavy surf ballast. The underside of the 2010 platform is at least partially filled (see pics from Ragboy in http://www.tigeowners.com/forum/show...801#post421801)

Would filling the underside of the platform help with smoothing the wave?

One idea is to put in ramp blocks leading up to the lip on the underside (so as to not fill the entire platform).

I know I would buy a few blocks that could be adhesived up underneath the platform along the trailing edges ...

different idea but i think same outcome
i put longer and wider taps plate made from aircraft alluminum(flexible)and that made huge difference as far as surf wake under 1000# plus weight and being able to fine tune it,but i would like to see your finished product.;; has your rivets popped out of your ski deck

Do you have before and after pics shawn? You've got me interested now. I always wondered if there was a magical length and width to the taps plate.

mybad ,no but i;ll try and some pics of the plate and the wake where it exits the ski dek better and some wakesurf pics
i spoke with justin in the r&d dept at tige last year about the mod and he said they played with it but not with the surf wake and not under a lot of weight

So the wider and longer TAPS plate diverts water away from where it usually intersects with the swim platform?

Wow, this sounds like a GREAT surf mod! But then I would always be worrying about the extra force relayed to the TAPS piston and mount. Hmmm.

            Hey Duncan,

A few years ago we staged a wakesurf contest down at the lower castaic lake and were fortunate enough to get a pair of Sanger 237's as tow boats.

The 237's had a fiberglass molded swimdeck, but the bottom was a matched cover, and the top and bottom were glued together with a chrome strip covering the seam. Inside it was hollow.

The bottom was smooth and definately impacted the wake LESS than if it was just the cupped top deck and no bottom. However, if there is any part of the swimdeck buried underwater, you still get an interferance on the wake face. On the 237, it created an almost secondary lip, that required some adjustment with their surf tabs.

From what I've experienced, the smooth underside helps, but the best solution is no swim deck in the wake.

            Hope that helps!

I have an 07 RZ2 that Im thinking about cutting my swim platform down, then taking it to a fiberglass shop and and haveing them make the edge nice and smooth then repaint it. I cant think of any reason why it wouldn't work and it would be a lot cheaper then the 1k for a new platform. Has anyone tried this?

I'm guessing that by the time you are done with adding a new swim pad, gelcoat, etc that you will be at almost the same price. Is it really $1k for a new one? Wonder if JeanW could hook us up with a group buy or something?

I was told it was 1k to get a new one.

From what shawn74 suggests, the wider and longer TAPS plate decreases intersection of the platform with the wake. Perhaps that in combination with a smooth platform underside would provide a synergistic improvement.

Though I really worry about changing something so central to the design of the boat, like the TAPS plate.
