Walker Project F-18 '4.6'

I am looking at a discounted Walker Project F-18 4.6 board. I am 5'10 @ 185 lbs. Not sure if 4.6 is too small. I thought 4.8 would probably be the right size. I have a Triple X Slasher 5.0 and I am looking to get a high end wakesurf board to allow me to advance to the next level and hopefully for a decent price.

I am interested in the Shred Stixx Comp 1 or Thresher but I can't find any used boards or discounted prices on those.

Do you guys think 4.6 is a good size or too small?

Any opinions on the TWP F-18 vs. SS Comp 1 & SS Thresher?

Any used Shred Stixx Comp 1, Shred Stixx Thresher, or TWP boards for sale?

I ride a hyperlite broadcast, 4'6" and I have no problem. I am 5'8" and 180 pounds. I also have a landlock that is 5'6" and no doubt it is easier but doesn't spin as well...I am not that good yet anyway so it doesn't matter too much

The Bullet and F-18 are significantly different boards. Folks that have difficulty with the Bullet or JWSM, aren't riding it, they are trimming the board and both of them need to be RIDDEN to work.

The F-18 differs from the Bullet in a few areas, first and most notable is the concave, the F-18 is flat. In terms of the boards you've listed, the SS Comp 1 is probably the most performance oriented. It does, however, come slotted as a quad which tends to make spinning surface 3's pretty hard for folks. No doubt most folks remove the trailing fin and ride it as a twin...but that is a compromise on the boards design. Most folks riding the Comp 1 as a twin would be better served buying a board designed as a rwin.

The older version of the Comp 1 was made from an XPS foam, that delaminated pretty easy in the heat. If you plan to buy a used one, check it carefully for bubbles or signs of a delam. The 2010 versions of the SS line are claiming to be epoxy and eps constructionm which doesn't delaminate as easy.

Thresher has the same construction pre-2010. Early non-chinese Threshers that were made by Vernor for Shred Stixx are Epoxy and EPS and might be a good value, depending upon shape.

My 2 cents, be cautious of the SS that are a solid color - you can't see the stringer and are pre-2010.

The F-18 is more of a beginner to intermediate board. I wouldn't consider it an upgrade to that Slaysher.

If you like that Slaysher, Triple X is having a few boards made here in the US with Pro Box fin boxes and a very nice shape. You might give the folks at Triple X a call and ask about their new 2010 model that Nick Scott is riding. Not sure about the price, the standard models are imported from China at a low cost, these new boards are manufactured in the US and so will no doubt come with a hefty price tag.

Thanks Surf dad. I had decided against the F-18 after some further research and your advice reconfirmed that conclusion.

The Triple X Slaysher is easy to ride, very buoyant, easy to stay in the pocket w/ longer fins (overall a good board to learn on), but I have had a hard time getting air off the wake - prob having to do with the board having no rocker in the tail, design of the tail, and the placement/degree direction of the fins. That’s why I am looking to get a newer board, to help me catch some air dude!

I will look into the new boards from Triple X. I am leaning toward the SS Comp 1 Quad fin setup.

Any other suggestions for premium Surf Style Boards?

Good surf eye! Not many folks pick up on the tail rocker issue. You need to be careful with tail rocker though, too much and it will tend to suck the tail down creating impressive amounts of drag.

The Comp 1 has a huge tail, which limits surface rotational moves to almost non-existent, especially as a quad. But if all you want is to do aerials, quads with that super wide tail will certainly do the trick. You'll have to learn an ollie 3 if you want to do 360's any more.

For a non-stock stick, Stretch has some good boards. Mostly Thrusters, but they release well. I don't know if you can find a used one though. Corey Snyder is getting decent air off of one of the Endless Break boards - the EB4. I think they have some additions for the 2010 model year. Worth looking into, ask which board Corey is riding for the 2010 season. You know who else I would call? Eric Roush at Roush Custom Creations. Tell him that Jeff and James sent you and you want a 'bro price on a composite sandwich. He is slower that molasses running uphill in February, but I'd bet you can get a fully custom board, lighter than any other commercial offering for what you'd pay for a used high end board. Tell him surf style aerial board.

Lastly, James loves his Signature Model from Mike @ TWP - but it's pricey.
