I usually throw around 800 pounds of ballast on the driver side of the boat (I am goofy foot) along with the driver and the wake is huge! I place 500 in the rear right locker and another 300 behind the driver. I have yet to see it with more people or weight. The boat tends to lean with that much weight but it is nice. I also forgot to mention speed, its pretty much the same as Tige22ityper. The TAPS is also set at max.
Its a trial and error type of deal. I don't have any weight just yet for my 22i, but we usually only surf when there is 6 or 7 people in the boat. We load everyone to the back, and back left corner (right foot forward surfing), and we usually set the perfect pass at 11-12.5 mph. This seems to be pretty good. We just started doing it in August of last year so we are not real good. The best time so far is about 3-4 minutes without the rope. Best to have the driver steer the boat in a slight arc toward the side of the surfer. When I add some weight this summer, it should get much better. The only time we surf is when the water gets too sloppy to ski or board.
Dom,
I picked up a Hyperlite Landlock surfboard last
August. A buddy of mine showed up with it one day, and we tried it out. Was awkward at first, being right behind the boat (feels like you will slam into the transom sometimes!!), but once we got a feel for it, it was pretty cool. I called my guy who gets me all my gear and had him send me one. We get crazy looks all the time at the lake. Not many people doing it yet. Hyperlite has a few different styles for '04. The Landlock and the Broadcast, its another board that is slightly smaller. Easy as pie to get up, but can be difficult to find the "sweet spot" where the rope goes slack and you are actually riding the wake.
I've got a 22v and I find that you need some weight in the front of the boat, since the engine is already in the back. I usually wakesurf after wakeboarding all day, so I drain one of my 350lb sacs on one side of the boat. Leaves me with 350lb on the left side (regular foot). I also keep my 540lb sac in the front walkway.
If there are not people in the boat I use my little 250lb fat buddies as well (one in back and 1 in front on the side). You could use your other 350lb sac (if you have one) and put both on 1 side.
I've just posted two pics of me this weekend surfing. Find in the galleries of this site. I surf untill I've had enough - about 12 minutes. I have 21i, taps on full, my 4 built in ballast full both sides with extra fat sack of about 100kg behind driver as thats the side I surf. My board is my 12yrs old sons Tich Paul (very short). At first I thought it was too small but by adjusting my weight forward or back I can control the speed fast or slow. One pic is back in the wash, the next pic. I come up closer to the boat and can then ride the lip. It sure takes the frustration away from not getting my back roll right!
Guys,
do you know of any problems with CO (Carbon Monoxide) while wakesurfing? I see that Centurion has come up with a 'sideswipe' exhaust - so you can send the exhaust to whatever side the wakesurfer isn't on.
I also see that California is trying to pass a law that requires engines to be turned off if there's anyone within 20 feet (to stop Teak Surfing) - but that'd kill wakesurfing as well...
I've not tried wakesurfing yet - but will do this summer...looks like a great pasttime when it's too rough for slalom / wakeboarding...
With my 20v I put about 800# in the left rear locker, set TAPS to 8, and Perfect Pass to about 10mph (varies from 9.5 to 11 depending on how many people are in the boat). This puts out a big wake with great shape, very easy to surf even with a smaller board.
On my 22V I had the stock balast filled on the left side (250 back and 250 in front) and then a 500lb sack half way filled on top of the tank in the back locker. I had the TAPS off and was going at 10.7 and surfing was ok, but couldn't find much power or anything. I was surfing on my TrickBoardz SurfSkate by the way.
