wannabe, some of the new gear out there helps a lot with landings. dog is right about the boards. any board with a nice v or concave center help to break up the water on impact. thus you get softer landings. bindings have come a long way since the past as well. the new foot beds are amazing. i have a gorgeous pair of 05 transits i'll sell you cheap but you'll have to let me know if you can fit in them. large/narrow size.

Landings are far softer on a continuous rocker board. My son, who'll be 13 tomorrow, switched from his '05 Byerly pro model to a Marius and the landings are much better for him. We've had to lengthen his rope to 75' and he's still landing out in the flats. He's getting way up there also, which makes those landings especially hard. I told him to start exercising his legs to strengthen them if he's going to continue doing that.
If I were you, I'd see about picking up an '07 Marius on close-out if you can. That board is really amazing. It accelerates like a rocket. My son can go wake to wake starting from just 10' outside the wake...and it's all so effortless. I hate it when you can't justify getting a new board. I look at new boards all the time but I like my HL State so much I can't do it.
