    Impact vests recommendations needed.

Hi, We have some 15 years old O'Brien CGA vests and looking to upgrade for me and my wife to something that gives better impact protection. I can't find any information on impact protection for CGA vests. At the same time, there is no information about flotation on impact vests. I don't mind if it will be a bit bulky, but I prefer to have both flotation and impact protection, not necessary CGA approved. Any suggestions?

I've found impact vests that aren't much on flotation. If you find one that meets both criteria, please post.

Usually the high impact is related to the collar for neck protection. Mustang Survival makes all of the professional rescue stuff. I have one and wear it when I ride PWC for the USCG Auxiliary. I can't imagine a need for one in a tow sport like behind our boats.

Mike, I think he is thinking something along these lines:

Sorry, You are right. We are doing kiteboarding and windsurfing as well and there impact west is more common term. With Wakeboarding it is usually called competition west which I assume is the same thing. That SAR vest that Mike is referring is too extreme for us Definitely we are looking for a comp west with a good flotation. Here is the article I found, but it does not give any comparison of actual products:

Haha. Thanks for the clarification. I have never heard of them called that before. I was wondering why anyone would want a big old bulky SAR vest?
            I'll read Vlad's link.

Without the vest being CGA you won't have the flotation you're looking for. Go to any reputable dealer and try some stuff on. I'd definitely recommend a CGA vest if you're looking for flotation. The wakeboard vest I use is not CGA but has decent impact protection while still providing more mobility than a bulkier vest which is what I wanted.
Consequently, the reason a CGA vest floats better is the same reason it'll soften any impact more.

If you want a vest for added floatation, an impact vest is not the solution since it has a thin layer of foam and will not keep your head out of the water.

Not sure if you made a decision but I just ordered a LF Watson CGA. Supposedly runs long (I'm 6'2" and hate how most life jackets feel like a belly shirt)....
