How fast is too fast to ski at?

So I take my brother in law out. he is a skier. He says to me I want you to tow me at 40mph?? I have only skied a handful of times. to me 31-33 was pretty fast to me.. but then again I dont know much about the sport. Have just always wake boarded.

Is this insanely fast.. or just a normal speed. just kinda took me back. But hey he could ride it for sure. just was like awesome to watch when he finally did make a mistake.

I have heard of 36. Barefoot might be at that speed. I would tow him at what ever he wants then look for him to give you a thumbs up or down.

34-36 is pretty common for someone that is above average on skill. So 40 wouldnt surprise me.

40 is pretty fast. 36 is top tournament speed.

Do you care much for your brother in law??? If not pull him at 45 mph with full ballast and taps up.

If you do care about him tell him you thought 36 mph is the top tournament speeds, and ask him the following questions? Are you sure you want to go 40 mph? Are you planning on barefooting? Do you have health insurance?

I'm guessing he thinks your boat being bigger is going to put out a large wake (well Z4 will) but going faster may make the wake smaller. 40 mph is fast for skiing, we got up to 38 mph on a skim board but that's another thread it is flat painful when you hit the water at those speeds. You could do some serious damage if you didn't come out of your ski.

Don't know how old your BIL is but when I was yound as in my teens I would ski behind a jet boat and finally maxed out it's potential i was well over 50 and 60mph. Not including when I would whip out on the turns. When I got back behind my dad's boat at 35 it seemed slow. Very slow. Then the falls hurt but now days I think it would be suicide.

Sometimes my wife runs me at 43 mph when she forgets to turn on perfect pass. I just hang on until she figures it out. O find that the boat spray actually stings a little at those speeds. My normal slalom is 34 mph.

Yeah mine does that with the wakeboard when she takes off. About the time she hits 35 or so she remembers the 22 mph part!!

During slalom ski competition, top speed is 36 mph if that helps at all.

The world water ski speed record is held by Grant Torrens of Queensland at 156 mph. Just off hand I would say that is a little fast for the average weekend skier.
