    $7 Worth of Waterskis

There is a huge community garage sale in a nearby neighborhood every spring. My wife usually participates at her mother's house which in this neighborhood. This year we bailed on it. She wanted to go up and walk around anyways. I said I'd go with her and we could check out my folks place that is nearing completion of a full remodel after a fire since it is right down the street from her mother's. After checking out the remodel, we went to check out a few garage sales. I ended up coming across an old Jobe Spectra 1200. He wanted $10 and, in the spirit of garage sale shopping, I offered him $7. Sold! I probably overpaid but, I couldn't walk away from a $7 slalom ski. I love old skis and have a few. On our way out of the neighborhood, I decided to swing by my uncle's house to see if he was having a garage sale. Sure enough, he was. Now, I've been skiing with him all my life and he used to ride a Jobe so, I immediately told him about my find. He told me to hold on a second. He disappeared into the garage but, soon reappeared with an old Maja in his hands. He was going to put it on eBay for $100 but decided to put it out with the garage sale stuff for $25. Nobody bought it! He told if I came to Shasta with them this year, he would give it to me. "Ah jeez, I don't know." He then brought out another ski, the old Bantam! This was the ski all the kids in the family learned to ski on, including me. "You want it?" Yer damn right I wanted it. He then went and grabbed another! Now, this one is truly special to me. It was my grandfathers Taperflex. It's a wild machine. It's super thin and super flexible. I'm told it is awesome in rough water. I might have to check it out.

Anyways, here's my $7 worth of waterskis...

I would ski on any one of those skis, except maybe the Bantam. It looks too small? I love trying cool things like that.
Looks fun. You should have a good time.

Cool skis Nicky. Like the wood one. I have a Jobe just like that one. Never use it though. Was given to me at a garage sale.

The key is to go up to the rich people neighborhood. Better stuff, cheaper prices. I picked up a Technical turntable for $10. Also a bunch of good records for $.25 a piece. I'm back in vinyl baby!

Ya, the Bantam is a kids ski. The rest are all 67". If you like cool old things, wait till you see the White Bear. If I can make the Shasta trip, I an going to ride it.

That's great, that Jobe is the exact ski my brother slaloms on! Gotta love the teal and pink!

I don't! I want to learn this year though, slalom looks pretty fun! Don't know how to snow ski either, only snowboard.

No chit! I thought knowing how to waterski was a prerequisite for owning a towboat and then you turn around and say you don't know how to snowski and you live in Colorado. I think its time for that FAE dude.

You really should learn to slalom though. It's truly a blast. You'll love it dude. There's just nothing like it. I've ridden just about everything out there behind a boat and have given them all up for surfing except the slalom ski. It's still awesome to go out and rip some turns off and blast through the wakes. You can generate so much speed and turn so hard. It's still exhilarating to me. After a good set, the adrenaline starts to subside and you get that euphoric sense of accomplishment that only comes from pushing your limits to the ragged edge.

My wife decided to count all the skis in the garage. 14 now.

That taperflex is wild. We used to ride one looooooong ago. That flat formica bottom is super slick so you better be good at holding your edge. Brings back a lot of memories. First time I ever successfully ran a course was behind an outboard Glastron on a Nash tunnel ski bought from the Army Navy store for about 25 bucks. We were really cool,or at least though so.

Love the Maja. My dad has one that he still skis on - must be 30 yrs old or so. It is the fastest slalom I have been on.
