You have to realize, that much content, even if at 1080P, its just scaled up to 1080P. Right now, 720P is going to give you best bang for your buck. And unless you can afford 65" Plasma at 1080P, or sit 3 feet from TV, you won't notice difference between 720p and 1080p anyway.
Also, so many TVs, TECHNICALLY display 1080P, but I would put my 720P 50" Panasonic plasma against any DLP or other type of projection TV any day.
What is the native resolution of your 42"? Probably 1366 x 768 if it is fairly recent. Some 42" are native 853x480, and some are 1024x768, few, and very expensive are 1920x1080.
Unless the NATIVE resolution of your TV is 1920x1080, you are not seeing 1080P. If you can select 1080P on your tv, it means it is accepting the signal, but not displaying at that. You can't display higher than your native res.
1366x768 is a TV that is designed for native 720p (1280x720) displaying. If you TV is this type, most are if recent, 720P is the best bet. You want to have everything at the NATIVE res of your display, so that the chips are NOT downscaling and upscaling, which degrades quality.
If your native is 1024x768, 720P is best for you, but they are purposely squishing hte image, then spreading it out.
If your resolution is 853x480, stick with 480P on everything. Keeping all at your native resolution will keep your picture the cleanest.

I agree with Ragboy, I work with this stuff almost everyday. If you sit at the proper distance from the tv you will not see any difference from a 720p and a 1080i or p. The only way you will see the difference is being closer then 3 feet. So 720 is the best, and why would you want to spend the extra cash for a 1080 p when visually you can't see the difference. Until content is at the level the tv can already display it is money not well spent for the 1080 p. If you can get away from a tv up-converting a signal the better off you are. Just my 2 .

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. There's a big difference between the Discovery Channel and the regular broadcast networks. Discovery broadcasts in 1080i, everything else is 720p.
The size of the TV does make a difference. Plasma is a waste for the larger screens because you start seeing the pixels.

Thats not true, it all comes through your cable box the same. I got a hd cable box, when they first came out. And you could connect firewire to it, and to your mac, and you could actually record the streams. They were all at 1080P mpeg2 streams. But most were less content, pumped up. The reason discovery looks so good, is they are shooting HD at 1080P, in beautiful light, and it looks fantastic. Most other crap coming over hd channels, is all kinds of content, pumped up to 1080p. When you see something brilliant, its because that content was prepared from start to finish at 1080p.
I think we're in violent agreement. I was trying to say that Discovery Channel and HDNet are the only channels that actually record their shows in something other than 720p. My cable box only puts out 1080i. But, my DLP makes it look good anyway (no interlace).

I agree, discovery stuff looks great, and others better, but its because of the quality of the source, and the original resolution, not necessarily the resolution of your TV.
a little off topic, but COD4 is my new game of choice. I love it. Especially on hardcore, I like shooting someone once or twice and they drop, instead of a whole friggin' clip

gamertag: Lucky 275 or lucky275 I can't remember.
I was thinking about a whole clip + a rifle butt hit.
I do like COD4 also. The only problem right now is that I want to play it more before I get online. I am not very reactive to shooting games like this. I prefer the RPG's.
Same for me, I just don't have the time to stay competitive in halo 3, or gears of war. I loved the gears of war coop campaign with my son. Then we get to multiplayer, he practices, and just wipes the ground with me. If I go in a halo MP game, I see blurs and then someone teabagging me.
That is why I like team fortress 2, and would love to find more people that would play it. It has different types of players, that help level the field. If you like running like hell and hit and run, you take the scout, or the spy. If you are like me, and want to defend a position, and have tons of firepower, you be the heavy, and use the gatlin gun. There is a doctor, sniper, demolition dude, engineer, its pretty darn cool.
