    Exhaust Flaps

My rubber exhaust flaps are getting worn. They no longer flap closed, undoubtedly letting in water when the engine's not running and we're just lounging on the lake.

Should this be a concern? How often do they need to be replaced?

    No. Thats perfectly normal.

I would say you should replace them if they tear off.

      Flaps

If they don't need to be replaced when they don't close, what are they there for?

They are not supposed to completly close. they are just there to prevent back pressure when you are in reverse.

Now's a good time to get an FAE, since your flaps need to come off anyways

haven't had mine apart yet but looks to me like you might be able to just turn the flap around and put it back on. Mine are starting to need something. 2004 hours as of yesterday.

              Back pressure

Thanks for the explanation, now it makes sense.

I looked at the Fresh Air Exhaust, dogbert. Since I'm still in the newbie/honeymoon stage of boat ownership $450 is a bit spendy right now and I still get a kick out of hearing a throaty V8.

              Maybe on my next boat...
