    fuel pump not engaging

I've had a strange problem. I went to start my boat and it wouldn't fire. I realized the fuel pump wasn't cycling on. I unplugged it, plugged it back in and started pumping. Came back a week later, and I had the same problem. Any ideas?

my bet is the relay. mine had a problem with hanging closed so it continuously ran, $25 bucks for a new one and good as new again. There are 2 relays located side by side atop the left side of the motor. They're lil black boxes about 3" x 2" x 2". this is on a 350 merc.

What do you mean it "continuously ran?" Did this lead to a dead battery, or what did it do?

It could be your fuel pressure regulator (located on top of the fuel cooler on your boat). Mine started acting up before it actually failed. It's a pain to remove because you have to remove a plastic housing around the muffler.

The other possibility is the fact that Mercs are really sensitive to the proper voltage available from your battery and will shut down completely if voltage is below a certain level. Maybe you have a battery that's starting to go or one of the plates in it is occasionally coming in contact with one of the other plates.

It might be worth it to have a Merc dealer read any codes before you start experimenting with a bunch of replacement parts.

Dog, I replaced the pump and regulator last year. The battery is only a year old as well. The boat runs fine once the pump engages. Someone on here last year told me that I should hear the pump cycle on when I first turn the key. I realized it wasn't doing that, so I unplugged the pump and plugged it back in (the electrical plug). Turned the key and it cycled on. This has happened twice.

Ok, one other thing to check is that there's a major wiring harness plug towards the front of your engine. My dealer told me that that plug gets corroded after a while. I see symptoms of this in my dash every once in a while. He suggested I unplug that, clean the contacts really well and plug it back in.

Also, you might try electrical cleaner on your connections. Same stuff you use on your spark plug wires.

when i would turn the key off my pump would stay running until i disconnected my battery.

Dog, that makes sense on the connection. I was thinking the same thing.

for an easy test on the relay, there should be two relays tegether side by side, one for the starter and one for the fuel pump, switch them out, turn the key and see if your pump cycles on.

I haven't been out to the boat since Saturday. I may get out there tonight, otherwise it will be next week. Unfortunately, I don't have a garage spot for it at home, so it stays about 25 min away.

alright, well none the less, we hope it works out to be something simple if this doesn't do the trick.

sounds like relay or bad ground
                            seen it more than once

Where did you unplug it - right at the fuel pump?
The connector may be corroded inside and may need to be cleaned or replaced. Try some WD40 or contact spray. Make sure there aren't any crimped splices in the line near the connector, if so solder the connection. I've gone thru the entire harness and soldered any crimped connector I could find.

When I turn the ignition key to ON the fuel pump will run a few seconds.
The pressure gauge I installed on the end of one of the fuel rails will show around 20-25 lbs.
The pressure will bleed off after awhile.
