    Knock sensor's function

I'm curious what exactly the knock sensor does? If something is wrong, will it just set off the alarm, or will it prevent the boat from starting? I only ask bc I may have damaged mine when winterizing. If it will just set off an alarm, I'll take my chances and see if the alarm goes off. If it's going to screw with my ability to operate, I'll order one.

Knock sensors cause the computer to retard the ignition timing when knocking is detected. I'm not sure just how the computer will react to a damaged, or disconnected, knock sensor.

If the computer senses that something is wrong with the knock sensor or that it is not there, it will go into limp mode and pull out the maximum timing allowed per the timing tables that it is operating on to make sure that the engine won't get damaged. In other words, if it was supposed to call for 34 degrees of timing and it's max that it could pull out was 10, it will pull out 10 and only advance 24 degrees.

Make sure you order a new one as it may limit your power and speed.

Thanks guys. I'll take a look at it this weekend. I really dont know if I damaged the thing, but I may have applied a little too much torque when trying to get it out. It looks like those things are like $60-80, so I don't want to buy a part I don't need. I never did get it out, but I was able to get the drain under it opened back up.
