    Drive shaft packing

I have a 1997 pre2002. Water is leaking in from around the drive shaft plastic nut. I was told there is a packing that goes around the shaft. The packing comes in different sizes. The local boat shop said to bring in a piece and they would match it. However there was nothing left when I took it apart. What size do I need. The engine is the Mercruiser 350 magnum. Thanks, Ron

There's a thread around here somewhere on this, just do a search.

BTW, here's that thread. There's some good pictures and a link to a DIY tutorial.

          Thanks

Thanks for all the advice. I also got a response from Lee Ramirez Tige' Parts Department Coordinator. He said if you have the Plastic/nylon nut it takes
1/4". Which is what I have. If you have the brass shaft seal assembly then it takes 3/16" flax rope. Thanks again to all who responded.
