    draining fuel

    i have a 2002 tige 22i... an i was anting to drain the fuel. it has about a half of tank of fuel in it and i think it is bad cause it sat for about three months and the when i took it out the other day it was running fine and then all of a sudden started kind of sputtering. does any one know how to drain the fuel from this model or have any suggestions. should i maybe just top ity off with fresh fuel to try to delute it and run it that way?

    You might want to check to see if you have water in the bottom of your tank. It can accumulate from having a partially filled tank and condensation from the heating and cooling of the air inside the tank.

      Doesn't sound like the fuel has spoiled as it would all spoil, not just part of it. This would result in a "no start" or poorly running engine from the beginning.

      Sounds like water. It is heavier then gas and will settle to the bottom and accumulate around the pickup.

      Remove the water/fuel sep and drain it into a large glass jar and see what settles out.

      If you find water, you can do 1 of 2 things. Run engine till filter fill up with water, drain, repeat. Very slow but no tools or disassembly.
      Or
      Drain tank and refill. Finding a place to dispose of gas is hard. If you are careful, you can get the good gas off the top and back into the tank and have very little to get rid off.
      Jack the nose up and see if you can snake a siphon down the filler.

      After your done, refill tank with fresh gas and add a couple bottles of Gas-Dry.

        If your boat has a carborater (sp) it may need a good cleaning. I'm not sure when they went to EFI.


        To drain it, the best way would be to pull the floor board up and disconnect the fill hose. The fill hose is quite large diameter so you should be able to get a pretty good look into the tank to ensure you get all the fuel. I suppose you could just stick a vacuum pump straight down the gas tank fill opening but you would have no idea how thorough you were. Removing the floor only takes me about 15 minutes (on a V drive) so I think it would be worth it.

        Fill it all the way back up to prevent condensation and add Stabil (or similar product) before you fill it so that it mixes well while filling and on the drive home.

          i think you have something here.. i am in texas and lately it has been 40 degrees one night and then 75 degrees in the day and the freezing the next nite and then 55 during the day and then 55 at night and then back to 65 during the day and i have had my boat under a covered rv awning with sides so it doesnt get rained on or anything but the weather can still get to it ...

          so pretty much there isnt a drain for the fuel tank. i am gonna have to do it the old fasion way then i guess. with a hose and some deep breaths.. lol

          so does anyone know why it would have ran so great at the begining.. was it just that the water hadnt setteled yet?????//

            Once the water/fuel separator became full of water, there was no where for the water to go but to the engine. They only hold about 4oz's of water I think.

            They work as a preventative and catch the normal condensation that builds up in a boat's tank.

              I would think you could get some gas siphons at your local auto parts store. There's just too many nasty additives in gas these days. I would definitely do as Jason suggested with the Stabil. I add it to just about every tank if we're not going out 2-3 times a week.

                    well when we went to the lake we darined ther water/fuel seperator again and again and never helped. so then i checked the plug wies.. all were good. and finally a decided to take off the distributer cap. and it has only got about 30 hours on it since it had been replaced. buat all the contact were nasty but not terrible .. so i took a flathead screwdriver and scraped em off.. ran perfect afterwards.. very happy


                    but what would cause them to get that way that fast?

                      Worn plugs....increased plug gap means increased current flow from coil, which causes increased burning of the cap and rotor contacts. Also a lean mixture (less fuel/more air) will cause an increase in cylinder resistance and increase coil output.

                        Not only worn plugs, but also plug wires. They recommend you replace your plug wires with your plugs at 400 hours. If you have a Merc engine, you need to replace your distributor cap every 2 years. Not sure why it doesn't last long, but it doesn't. So, I do it every time I replace my impeller.

                        I'd go ahead and get a new distributor cap.

                          but i just replace plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor pretty much a whole tune up about 30 hours ago or so. ????????

                            Check the gap on the new plugs.
