    Gearbox Oil

    Hi guys,
    Finally got my new 20v nearly a month ago now, having imported her from US to the UK, so far have managed to put 14Hrs on hoping to hit the magic 20/25 next week as we have a bank holiday here.
    Had A few problems on the way haulage/ shipping etc. but got her here safely in the end.
    I have checked all the engine fluid levels, inc water ( had fresh water cooling fitted, due to running her in the sea as we have very few lakes where you can use powerboats now in the UK).
    But I am not sure what oil the gearbox requires and how to check the level?
    I have noticed a dip stick on the box but can't find any reference to this in any of my manuals.
    I have the Marine Power Engine service manual ( 340HP) and owners manual but these cover only the engine, as you would expect.

    Does anyone know what type of oil is used and when to check the level ( hot or cold) does the unit need to be at a certain angle etc?

    Also are there any manual's covering the other components( hard copy or downloadable), as the only ones I have cover the engine only?

      What type of transmission does it have? Most of the velvet drive trannys require ATF DexIII compatible.

        Under the "Downloads" section go to "Engine Components" and there is a manual. It advises to use SAE 30 motor oil.
        Not sure if that manual applies to your specific drive, but I'm sure you could call Tige and get a definitive answer whether it does or not. It's a decent manul if it works for you.
        Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

          Thanks for the advise.
          You'll have to bare with me as I have owned boats since around 19, but these have been mainly sterndrive sportsboats or outboards.
          This is the first v-drive I have owned as I finally secum to buying a ski/wakeboard boat having sought a decent mono ski-ing wake for ages but just making do with the mediocre wake of a sterndrive.
          I have tried ( dare I say it) a Mastercraft X2 but wasn't impressed with the slalom wake, as this seemed to create too big of a wash, even more than my sterndrive.
          I had looked at Tige boats in the UK, but the price was out of reach for a new one, and the secondhand market was very limited any 2 or 3 yr old boat would sell very quickly ( if any came up for sale).

          I had noticed the Walter V-drive manual in the downloads section and this looks similar to mine, although I won't be able to check this until I go back down to North Wales where I keep her during the season.
          The oil level plug on the top looks familiar but I can also recall a brown quick release ( T shaped ) plug between the Blue V-drive casing and the rear bell housing of the engine.
          Not sure what this is.
          You'll have to explain what a velvet drive is as I'm not up on v-drives, but am willing to learn.

          Ski boats are few and far between here in the UK as were so small in comparison to the US and have only a few lakes you can ski on.
          Ski/Wakeboard boats are mainly owned by Ski schools who have access to their own lake's.

            velvet drive is a brand. There is also borg warner and others. it will have a plate on it with the model, serial, and the brand.

              Spharis, that was quick.
              Did some googling and found a schematic of a velvet drive.
              This has the T bar plug I was referring to and could be the same type I have.
              I will have to check the plate you refer to when I next visit.

              Am I right in saying the drive chain would have a velvet/ borg warner (or similar gearbox) feeding into a Walter/ similar V-drive transfer box which ultimately feeds the shaft/ propeller.

                  Things are looking a bit clearer, just need the make/ model no's of the plates and should be on the way.
                  All the info is much appreciated.
                  Will post the req'd details when I get it, and hopefully find some more info/ manual's covering the units.

                  In the meantime I think i'll raise another topic/thread?
