I agree that's how it would happen, but the impeller in my brand new take-off spare pump was just installed backwards. The rotation arrow on the back plate even shows the correct direction of rotation. If anyone gets a new replacement pump just be sure to check the impeller vanes to be sure it was installed correctly.

While the Globe blue impellers look interesting when I checked with them a few months ago they did not make a replacement for the standard Merc Mag MPI type in our boat. (Merc impeller - 47-59362 1, Sierra 18-3087)

The original raw water pump housing has three bolts (5/16" x 3 1/2") that go thru the mounting bracket and have nuts/lockwashers to secure them to the bracket. The bolts are long enough to double nut them which I did. There is a 4th bolt than could go thru the bracket so I'm going to get another longer bolt to make it 4 bolts anchoring the pump housing to the bracket. I don't want it to work loose again.

The spare pump bolts are only 3 1/4" long and can't be double nutted. When I take it apart to fix the impeller I'll replace 4 of the bolts with longer ones.

You must have a pump with the keyway instead of the flat spot in the impeller. The pn for the globe with the flat spot is 2001.
Where did you find a complete spare pump with brackets for a reasonable price or was it not reasonable?

Our impeller has the flatspot. The Globe website doesn't list a 2001, only a model 2000 - Inboards 1981 to present (belt). Maybe the older pumps use a keyway and they changed to a flat for the serpentine. Thanks for the info, I'll call them on Monday.

I got the pump from a guy clearing out a few take-offs on ebay for around $110. Maybe it was a good price because the impeller was installed backwards. Was easy to correct and everything looks brand new.

Our boat sat for 2 years before we got it. The original impeller was 6 years old with 41 hours on it. All the rubber felt pliable, but two of the vanes were all cracked at the base while the others looked new.

I saw an article on replacing impellers that suggested using a little marine lithium grease on the vanes. Seems like a good idea.

The globe with the flat spot does exist, I snagged it for something like $45 on e-bay and I am pretty sure about the number 2001, I saw the box out in the garage not long ago, will post a correction if I am wrong.
I put em together with a goey "O" ring assembly lube, probably easier found as a brake caliper assembly lube. I would think a petro based grease would shorten the life of a black one but the globe it should not matter. A couple of zip ties helps to hold it all wrapped up as you put it in but the globe is so much more flexible you can do it by hand.
I only got about 16 hours out of a black impeller once because I changed it toward the end of the season and it sat all winter.
Let me know what it costs you for the globe cause I kind of would like to have a spare. There are a few dealers selling globes on e-bay for other makes and say they can get others if globe will not sell direct.

I bought a Goodyear Gatorback belt ($27) and was happy with it for while. I had it on as tight as I could get it. Slowly I noticed black dust over the motor. I cleaned the motor and switched back to the merc belt. I got a new Gatorback and keep it as a spare. I think I had it on too tight.

The left belt is an original Merc belt, the center one is a Drive Rite and the right one is a Prestone. The Drive Rite ribs are not made the same and it sat way down in the grooves and ground the edges off getting powdered rubber all over everything. Made no noise while doing it. The Prestone works fine.
