    Tapered shaft coupler key

Upon installation of the PSS, removal of the old coupler revealed either no slot key, or that I somehow caused it to evaporate into thin air.

Is the slot key on the tapered shaft a requirement on a normal rotation engine? The only time the shaft could possibly back out would be in reverse, otherwise it is always tightening.

There is a nut on the back of the coupler with a set screw to ensure it doesn't back off.

BTW my little short boat made the install quite a bit more difficult than if I had one of you guys' monsters.

YES, you should have a key on both ends of the shaft. Do you have a slot in the shaft for a key?

Yep....slots and all, just no key. Guess I need to find/make one.

Well.....guess what I found way inside the bilge. Apparently when the coupler popped loose from the shaft (while using a socket to press it out) it must have shot that far to the front of the boat. When I say it popped loose, I mean it realy popped it loose. Loud twang, and the coupler bounced off the shaft. Anyway, keyed up and good to go. I was taking it loose today to measure so I could grind my old prop key into a replacement.
