    Whining belt

My belt is beginning to whine. I am thinking that it is because the aftermarket alternator is still too far back and is causing the belt to be off just a little. I am going to try adding another washer on try to push the pulley out any farther. My belt is new. Any other thoughts?

Check to make sure there is the correct amount of tension on the belt. When correctly tightened, you should be able to depress the belt about half an inch to an inch. Too little tension can cause slippage, which will give you a screeching type whining sound. If the alternator does happen to be a bit off-line and the belt rides up on the pulley, it can create a whine also. If you can shim with a couple of washers, that would probably work to get the pulleys aligned better. Look at the back surface of the belt and make sure it doesn't have a glazed, shiny look. That would be a bad thing.

      Good luck!

I tried loosening the belt on the water and the whine went away except when taking off fast, then it gave the belt slipping whine. Thanks for the info on how tight, I didn't know if I had it too tight or not to begin with. Does anybody know if the pulleys need to be lubed and if yes, what do you use?

Sound like bearing whine, from alt. or water pump maybe?

It appears that I have fixed my whining belt. I shimmed the alternator out a little farther with a washer and so far it has eliminated the squeal. It sounds like it was coming from one of the pulleys next to the alternator.
