    Electric Choke

Where does the solenoid for the electric choke get its signal? For whatever reason, mine does not appear to be working. I have had to manually close it off the last 2 times I have started the engine. I have a 1997 Marine Power 5.7 with a Holley 4BBL electric choke. Once the engine is running, the choke solenoid appears to be working correctly, but before it runs, it doesn't appear to have any input. I have not checked it with a multimeter yet to be sure, but there is no resistance at all.

Last time on the water (2 weekends) I had to get jumped b/c I drained the battery after failed starts. Holding the choke closed, the engine fired right up.

The electric choke is normally powered off of the alternator, I would suggest you check your charging output. Next check for bad connections at the alternator.

Aren't these bi-matelic spring type thermostats, like on an automotive carb, or do they use a stepper-motor type elec solenoid?

Holleys have the bimetallic. This one may just need to be adjusted. I haven't had time to look at it again. It should take 8-10 seconds to open all the way. I am thinking mine may also be connected incorrectly, so the spring is always hot. If it is connected to the alt post, then it would be getting a 12V sense from the battery all the time (I do not have any switches inline with my battery), so it would always be open. Of course it will also have fried the thermostat (spring) by now, and I'll need a new one. I'll need to put it on a true ignition source.

Usually the stat is powered of the 'charge' side of the alt. (only hot when engine is running) if the choke was hot all the time, I would think that it would run the battery down between outings?
If you have a self powered test light ( >$10.00 @ pepboys), check to make sure you do not have volts at the choke terminal with key off, then start engine and see if you do have volts at the terminal.

If this is the case, than I think your right about adjustment or maybe replacement.

The choke is powered by the stator on the alternator which is only powered when charging.

My question would be how did the choke get out of adjustment, this would not be normal.

Don't know. Carb is new as of this past August or so. For all I know it has been incorreclty hooked up since.
