    Circulating water pump

    Hi guys,

On a fresh water cooled, Direct Drive, 22i. Is it equiped with a circulating water pump as well as a Raw water pump? Seems to be right under the Thermostat housing.

Changed raw water pump impeller, still Not getting any water circulation. The engine just won't suck any water in.

    thanks, John

Maybe there is something wrong with the impeller housing itself?

      Could be,

but it doesn't leak, didn't seemed cracked, Shaft not broken, and really doesn't pull-in any water at all. Thats why I was thinking it may be the circulating pump. I haven't worked on enough boats to have a good scope of problem solving issues.

I had a similar issue with my boat last season after changing the impeller. I removed the impeller, reversed the blades and it started moving water. People will tell you that it doesn't matter what direction the blades are going because the are supposed to correct themselves but in my case they didn't. Hope this helps.

Are you getting water out of the exhaust?

Welcome to the forum! I have that exact same motor as do many other older model boats...

At first glance, that Impeller looks to be in pretty rough shape.. Did you replace it recently? I replace mine every season as do many others... so if that doesn't solve the problem check out the housing... You definitely look like something might be binding on the inside of the housing... It is really hard to see the problem with the naked eye sometimes.. but in my experience even the smallest abrasions can affect the ability for the impeller to do it's job. I would get a brand new housing because looking at the flanges of the impeller you can see something is scoring it.

Just my two cents but I have had to pull my impeller housing one too many times so do it right the first time.. At least yours is not a v-drive!

            Hope that helps!

You say that's a new impeller? It looks like there's chunks of rubber missing on the middle of the blades, no? I'd get a piece of scotch bright pad and clean the housing and baseplate really well. You also should have a glycerin lube that comes with the new impeller, this needs to go on all the impeller blades and the inside of the housing walls.
You say it's not sucking in water, are you basing this off using a fake a lake? If so make sure you have a really tight seal against the hull of the boat and if you can get a second person to help have them turn the water on right after the engine turns over. I've had a problem with the water pressure blowing out the seal of the fake a lake on the boat hull and the engine then struggles to suck it up.

                Thanks for the tips guys!

No, the impeller shown in the pics is the old one. The new one looks a lot better.

I didn't have any lube to put this in. I will try it again with lube. I also thought the blades would fall in place on their own considering the shape of this thing, but I guess I may be wrong. Will give it another shot.

I did use a Fake-a-lake setup. It's kinde getto... but it's worked very well before with this boat. No reason it wouldn't this time.

Next time you run the engine, take the exhaust hose off the impeller housing to see if water is flowing out.

On my Merc 350, the only time the raw water pump doesn't work after changing the impeller is due to me putting the impeller in backwards. It should reverse itself, but the tight fit on a new impeller does not allow it to reverse itself on all occasions. Unfortunately, I have made this mistake on note than one occasion. Now, I always check the rotation marking on the impeller housing prior to reassembling. Just my two cents.

I also had this problem on my 21 v but it was because I rushed through it and bolted the impeller hosing upside down if I remember correctly and then hooked up the hoses backwards since the housing was upside down. So the inlet hose was hooked up to the outlet port and vice versa for the outlet hose. I pulled it realized my mistake and everything worked like it should afterwords when hooked up correctly.

We all have phone with cameras. I always take a picture of the fins before I pull the impeller. Actually I do this on lots of repairs. Its a great tool!!

X2 on scotchbrite cleaning the base plate, also if you have not chang d the o-ring on the housing make sure you do.

Any luck yet?? Shot in the dark, but have also seen suction side hoses collapse and not let water through, but only when hose has been replace with improper automotive hose (wire reinforced hose is normally used to prevent collapse)

Also be aware there will probably be a gearbox heat exchanger in line with the raw water. Left side of engine low down on my boat. This can block with debris when pump impeller fails. Worth taking the hose off the inlet end and checking.
I just lubed impeller with dishwashing liquid when i changed mine. Had a crack in the housing so changed housing as well.
