    How hot is too hot??

Spent all last week at Powell. On my second-to-last day I decided to check my in-line water strainer which had a bunch of gunk in it. Cleaned it out. The next day, I was idling for probably a good 10-15 minutes out in the lake and went to put it in gear and the engine started sputtering and backfiring. Looked at the temp guage and it was just shy of 250. Shut it down and called for a tow back to camp. Back at camp I checked the impeller which was fine. Checked my strainer and the sight glass was a little loose. Tightened that up and waited for engine to cool down and ran fine the rest of the day. My only thought was the strainer sight glass was letting some air in and there was not good suction of water to the engine. Should I be concerned about any internal damage with the temp spiking that high? Like I said engine ran fine after it cooled back down and stayed cool the rest of the trip.

I would think your exhaust hose or muffler would have melted.

You could have gotten lucky. I would check oil and check for leaks. You might be fine. My temp gauge is totally wrong, I need to fix that

Maybe my temp guage is wrong as well and didn't get hot enough to melt anything. I have had a couple of GM vortechs in prior I/O overheat due to impeller issues and have had stuff melt. The engine this time was definately hot, but I could still touch the manifold with my bare hand and think it wasn't that hot.

I'll check the oil and leak test.

If the risers are still able to be touched then my guess would be you were still getting some water through there which would have kept the exhaust hopefully cool enough to prevent any cracks or melting. The best thing was you got towed back, and it was allowed to cool at a slow rate instead of fixing the problem and then firing it back up and putting cold water through an already super hot motor and exhaust which can flash cool everything and tends to break and crack things.

Do you still have mufflers, or are you wet exhaust hose all the way out from the riser?

I had this happen on my 2005 24V. My exhaust manifold was cool but boat went into 'Limp" mode and temp pegged out. My block was smoking hot though. I had disconnected my coolant hose a few days earlier to get to something. The block is cooled bye the heater exchange/block. Did not know this!.....the cooling system had vapor locked and to coolant was getting to block. Drained it with cap off and refilled. Problem solved
