V-drive noise in R20 and FAE

Our 2014 sounds identical, like I said from the factory at same time. We have 220 ish hours and it has sounded like that for all of them. If you find a problem we might also have that problem.

I wonder if it's not a trans/v-drive noise? Alternator maybe?

I'll grab a length of hose and listen at different spots next time I'm out.

It's not the alternator. It's definitely in the drive part of the unit. It's also only evident in gear.

My mock stethoscope (hose) didn't really work, but holding the camera grip against the transmission and v-drive picked up some interesting noise. The transmission doesn't sound as smooth as I would expect, and the v-drive is definitely the source of the whine! See video below.

Is this normal? Anyone else besides me and bsreid have the same v-drive?

I've got the exact same engine and drive, 100 hours on mine and it doesn't sound anything like yours! Not normal, kind of sounds like gear clatter to me. Is it still under warranty?

V-drive noise in R20 and FAE

Have a 2014 rzr, 200+ hrs, don't seem to have that noise. The wind/whistle/air from the first video at certain rpm yes, but not that whine sound you have.

Mine is running Dex6 atf. I would probably get into the dealer and show him your video. I really think it sounds like gear clatter.

Have you contacted John at redline? I know it's a expensive 500 dollars later to get there but the are good to deal with. You could always take it to Nanaimo at Parker if you want to trust them.

Update: Jon from Redline water tested my R20 and confirmed that the transmission is excessively noisy (and noticed that it drags - prop turns more than normal while in neutral), and rejected Indmar's suggestion to rebuild it. Instead, I'm getting a new transmission under warranty. It will be a few more weeks before I see my boat again... Fortunately I have friends with boats!

When you say "changed the ATF" do you mean you changed to 30W or just cycled the ATF?

My trans/v-drive sounds like yours (possibly not as loud). It currently has ATF in the trans as well as the v-drive but I'm going to change to 30W this weekend as Tige says it quiets the noise.

Do you have an official Tige bulletin indicating the change to 30W? I believe my transmission and v-drive are both Indmar units. What is yours? Cheers.

Mine is a Hurth (ZF 45 IV I believe). There are some other threads here that talk about 30W vs ATF and that Tige confirmed it. I emailed Tige (trust but verify) and got a response confirming for mine they switched to 30W. We'll see how much quieter it is. I also just ordered an FAE, so all the more reason to go in that direction.

My 2014 r20 sounds the exact same. Whine coming from the vdrive. Does not do it out of the water. Any solution?
