Do Marine Power engines have a good reputation?

I'm considering buying my first Tige, a 2008 Tige 22v, this week, but someone I spoke to recently didn't think too highly of Marine Power. They suggested I went with a 2009 so I could get one with a PCM engine. I googled and looked around this forum and I haven't found any strong opinions against Marine Power so I thought I'd just ask the questions out right. Are Marine Power engines any good when maintained well? Are they known for having problems? Would you say they are reliable? Does anyone know why Tige stopped using them?

It has the GM Vortec 5.7L, 340 hp.

    Thanks in advance

Same Marinized GM blocks as everyone else, so yes. Tige moved away from MP due to them not being ready with CATs for the 1st year they were required in CA. They wanted to use PCM for just those CA bound boats, but PSM said all or none.

I don't and haven't had any problems. I wanna say that some of the items for routine maintenance are actually easier on the MP's than the PCM. I know that several will look at engine brands like they do vehicle brands. Tige has already moved away from PCM too.

They were a very good engine never had any major problems , our ski team boat has 1650hrs only has had oil changes and a couple of starters still on oringinal exhaust manifolds.

I personally have had no issues with my Marine Power engine in my 07 model but only have 150 hours on it I did recently have to send the ECM off to Marine Power and have them flash it and they did it without charging and were very easy to work with so that says a lot about them to me. The problem it was having was with the Tige speed set comingling with the Ecm so I don't know who you could point the finger at four this issue. Another guy that goes to our lake had over 600 hours on his Marine Power 08 model and it ran perfect. The 340 hp engines crank out plenty of power and don't do that horribly on fuel

One commonly discussed issue is on the years with the throttle by wire you cannot install perfect pass on them.

My boat has one and I went out of my way to make sure I found one that did. I was once in the boat repair biz and love the marine power engine. I prefer them over all the other marine engines. I worked on all the major brands. Like PCM Indmar mercruiser. I would not shy away from a boat deal because it had a MP engine. I would count it as a plus.
