22V New Motor Question???

We have a '99 22V that we bought new 13 years ago. It has over 1000 hours on it and has been an awesome boat. The V drive finally went out and we decided it is time for an overhaul. One of the shops in Salt Lake told us that there is a lot of labor involved in replacing the v-drive transmission because the motor needs to be taken out, and since the motor has over 1000 hours we should consider replacing the motor too. The estimate is about $6k. I don't know much about mechanics, so I'm not sure if this is necessary. Any suggestions on where to take it in SLC and get an honest estimate and the right work for our boat that will give it lots more years of life?

Where in SLC did the quote come from? Marine Products can do it.. but I think it will be more like 10k if you go there, but if that quote came from there.. I would jump all over it.

Motor doesn't need to be taken out. Actually replacing the v-drive is super super simple. I changed over my old boat from 1:1 to 1:1.46 and the whole process took me less then 2 hours. Especially on a Tige. Once you remove the back seat, you have tons and tons of room. Basically drain the v-drive, then unbolt the v-drive from the prop shaft (probably the hardest part, since it's a tight area) then unbolt the v-drive from the tranny. Here is one on here for $500

I bought my v-drive from centurion as new old stock. The whole project cost me around $400 (if memory serves me) after I sold my old 1:1.

Yeah dude, beware... 1000 hours is way better than 200!!!! It means the boat got used and maintained and all problems were looked after. Also, check the engine computer to verify the hours as the dash mounted gauges are running when the key is on, not when the engine is running. My boat has 136 extra hours on it from the previous owners forgetfulness. Also, my commercial towboat has 454 big blocks in it, carbureted, and had 5323 hours on them before I rebuilt them from a dropped valve. AND! $6000 for a repower is not even close, you get what you pay for and if it aint broke.... good luck but don't replace the motor just because it's got time on it.

I agree. Last Cruiser boat we bought had twin 350's in it with 900 hours when we bought it. As danny "the count" says "they were tight and right". Those motors will go 1500-2000 easy with proper care. I've seen then go 3000+ with regular light use, thats probably pushing it in a tow boat. 6k for engine and V drive seems low.

Have the compression tested. I bet the engine is fine
