All you do is, unscrew the brass or plastic nut that is on the shaft where it exits the hull. Pull all old packing out and then wrap new packing around shaft and screw back together. With boat in the water you should have 1 drip about every ten seconds coming out from the bushing. Any less water and the packing will burn too fast and not last very long.
