    Start Up Squeek

I took my 20V out for the 2nd time yesterday and I am now hearing a quick squeek from the trans. or somewhere around there. It happens about 1 to 2 seconds after the engine starts. Can anyone help? Is there sonthing I can lubricate? and, Is this somthing I sould be concerned about? Thanks.

Are you sure it is coming from the tranny? In my experience, squeeking usually comes from the belt/pully...

I believe that it is coming form the floor, or around that area. I would think if it was a belt of pully that it would be continuous? Im not really positive. I will search it out further next time we take it out. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experiance.

Usually that sound is a belt or pulley like Zacky said. 9 out 10 times that sound has either been a seized impeller pump or bad belt.

          Is the boat in Gear?
If so check all the shaft seals.

There are not many things that can squeak at that location.
You have small shaft coming from the transmission, and going to the V-Drive.
There is a second shaft coming out of the V-drive going through the hull off the boat.
There are a total of 4 seals. (The seal going through the hull is a different type then the others.)
I have had this happen to the transmission on a Saturn before. It would squeak for a few seconds when you started to drive it, and then it would be quiet till the next day.

If the shaft seal going through the hull is too tight (not getting wet) it might squeak,
Again this would only happen when the boat is in gear.

If the squeak happens before you put the boat in gear, there is nothing that I can think of back there that would do that, everything is in the front of the engine like the other said.

You will probably need to run the boat with some of the cover s off and the engine hatch open. Have somebody else start the boat while your listening for the sound.

          Good luck

No. Its in nutral. You know when you start the engine and it revs. up and then drops to idle... right after the revs. start to drop it squeeks.

My money is on soothing in the front of the engine.
It could be a loose belt, Water pump, Pickup pump, or the alternator.

When you find the problem, please let us know.

              Thanks David

With the boat out of gear this eliminates the drive train. I would check the belt first. The other item could be the impeller after sitting so long it has dried out and once it starts getting the water circulated it will stop. How long since you used the boat last and what motor is installed. If you want to pm me that info that will be great or give me a call 325-676-7777.

Is it a constant squeel or a squeek squeek squeek squeek?
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

No its just once when you start the engine. (every time)

And for those of you out there who think I can't spell... I spelt squeak, squeek to discribe the sound it makes with the long ee. Thanks for all of your help.

                        I had a thought.
After your done for the day, do you run the engine after you pull the boat out of the water?
If so you could removing all the water from the pickup pump.
It would dry up, and the next time you start the engine it might make some noise until the water starts to flow.

If so try not running the engine after you pull the boat out of the water.
(I personally never run the engine out of the water)

No, I do not dry run the engine. I dont think that, that would be very smart!

My friend told me to dry the engine but I told him he's stupid and I'm not going to do that with a new 50K boat.

The noise that you are hearing is the water and fluid going through the transmission. It only happens on start up and last couple few seconds. Some boats do it more then others but do not be alarmed. as long as the noise you are hearing is at the trans at start up.
