    Broken Bolt on Impeller Housing...

    So I semi-successfully changed the impeller in my '08 20V (Marine Power) over the weekend. While cranking down on the last of the 4 bolts on the housing, I got a little too popeye with it and busted the damn head off. With the 3 others tightly on there and the gasket, it looks like it still might be pretty air-tight. I don't really want to take the entire pump off to try to remove what remains of the screw, but I guess it may be inevitable. What are the risks to running the boat as-is? If I don't see any water leaking out back there, am I ok?

    btw - the entire weekend wasn't riddled with failure. I did manage to install some new SS cup holders and wetsounds all with red led's (thanks to chpthril for setting me up with the leds!). check out the pic (hopefully below)

      You may be able to get it out with a left handed drill bit.If not i'm sure a bolt extractor will work as i'm sure it didn't bottom out.
      I do all my own stunt work. hey ya'll watch dis.

        I would be surprised if it does not leak a bit. I guess you could wait and see how bad it gets, but I expect you will need to remove the housing to repair / replace it.

          If it broke off at the head, leaving some bolt shaft sticking out of the threads, you should be able to get some pliers or vice-grips on it and just unscrew it out. Then use four new, matching, high grade replacements. I had this happen on a previous boat's engine and by removing the accessory the remainder of the bolt was just sitting there, easy to grab and remove.

          It would bug me every day until it was fixed properly. Just do it now, so it's done on YOUR offseason schedule.

            we had a guy that used to work for us that broke atleast one of every week. If you just take the other 3 back off and remove the cover you should be able to just twist it by hand. We never had a problem getting the broken piece out. The problem you will have is finding a replacement one for the broken one. We always kept them out of pumps we replace because this guy would break them all the time. Good Luck.

              LEDs look great

              I agree with the above comments. If its not broken flush with the surface of the pump body, they should be able to grab hold of whats left and spin it out. It should not be too tight as it was already out and was just reinstalled.

                Try using a small flat screwdriver or heavy duty pick. It might just spin right out without removing the cover.

                  cool...thanks for all of the replies. it sounds like the general consensus is that i need to fix it. i haven't actually tried removing the cover yet since i was selfishly hoping to ignore it, but ill take a peek today and see what if anything remains exposed from the broken screw.

                  any idea where to find replacement screws? do they need to be brass or could i go with something stronger like stainless? thanks again for convincing me to do the right thing!

                    Use the same material if possible to avoid galvanic corrosion. If not possible, use something as close as possible on the triboelectric scale.

                    Do you have a local Fasteners store? They carry almost everything....

                      I've gotten replacement screws from either ace or true value. I would use brass

                        Awesome thank again for all the replies. I think I may have found some replacements (have yet to put my hands on them). I'm nervous to see how much of a pita the old one will be to get out. If only I can get out of the office and go mess about in my boat....

                          Well I opened up the housing today to reveal yet another annoyance - the bolt broke off pretty much flush with the housing - meaning there is nothing exposed for me to grab on to and extract. I guess I am going to have to start drilling...

                            No biggie if you booger the threads, you can retap with the next size up.
                            Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...
