My steering has gotten stiff on my 2002 Tige 22IR and I am thinking that the steering cable will need replacement. Any other thoughts on what else may cause this and / or do it yourself ideas to replace and buy parts.

Our steering became really stiff and my mechanic basically re-lubricated the cable somehow ... works like new. I'm not sure HOW he did it, but only that it is possible, and I didn't have to put a new cable in. If you have a mechanic, you may want to check with him/her on it before replacing the entire cable.

stiff steering
I keep hearing about the short life on the steering cables.I have an o3,21 I.I pulled up floor panel behind the doghouse and seen where the cable hooks up in front of rudder.I unscrewed the cable there, pulled it apart and oiled the cable.I also lubed at the back where the cable comes out the shaft. So far so good.

My experience was after 2 years the steering became quite stiff. I greased the cable and it fixed it right up. Then after 6 months it started getting stiff again. More grease and it was better, but each time, not as good as before and didn't last as long. Eventually you have to replace the cable- prob. $120- 180 if you do it yourself. Also it is best to use white lithium grease. Don't worry too much, it is inevitable on every non-I/O boat, and not that hard to do.
