    Replacing flax packing

I recently replaced the old flax packing in the stuffing box on my 2000 Tige 21V. I have a couple questions to anyone who has done this before. I pulled the old flax out, which had been leaking excessively. Well only two rings were inside the packing nut. I purchase 3/16" GTO dripless flax and cut out five rings. I installed the rings, staggering the joints as noted in the instructions. It appeared the stuffing was small, by that I mean it was fairly easy to push down into the packing nut. I was anticipating a much tighter fit as the old stuffing was difficult to remove. I haven't had the boat in the water since I replaced the stuffing so I haven't determined if I have the wrong size flax or what kind of drip rate per minute I'm going to end up with.

I would like to hear from anyone who has done this before. Does anyone know if 3/16" flax is the correct size for a Tige? I sent an email to Tige and Andrew responded with that size. Just curious.

    Thanks in advance!

    packing

I replaced the packing in my old Supra. The packing they sent me I thought was too big.The bottom line they should know whats right. It worked fine.I would say when you tighten the packing nut it will seal just fine.

That's what I wanted to hear. I'm going to try and get her in the water this weekend and make any final adjustments necessary.

      Thanks for the quick response.

The packing rope should be 1/4" and 2 rings is all your going to get in there. One on each side of the nylon washer. The drip rate should be 1 drop every 4-5 seconds. Any less and you can burn the shaft.
Two suggestions, replace the packing with the correct rope or step up to the PSS system. It is a mechanical seal that requires no adjusting. 10 year warranty.

          flax packing

Great.... I was hoping to put the boat in the water this weekend. Here is the email I got from Andrew:

This was a packing shaft seal and sounds like the packing needs to be replaced. Please contact your dealership and they can accomplish this and they will need to use a 3/16 flax packing. Once this is replaced this should solve your problem. If there are any further questions please let me
          know.

          Thanks

          Andrew

How do I verify the size of the packing? Is it trial and error? Or should I order some 1/4" and go from there?

          Thanks,

          Chris

3/16 is what comes in the units from the factory. You can use eather.

what type of packing do the '04s use, and how often does it need to be changed?

We use PSS now and there is no packing to change.

That brings up a great point. I have looked into purchasing the PSS shaft seal but I'm a couple hours from the nearest dealer for installation. Does anyone have experience installing these? Is it something for the do-it-yourself crowd?

Should I start another post for this question?

You can do it yourself and I can walk/talk you through it. Not that difficult and should take a couple of hours. Give me a call 325-676-7777 and I can explain everything to you. BTW my time is only $75 hr for phone calls, j/k

                          Now that's service!

What is the propeller shaft size or PSS part number I would need? I'll order one and give you a call. Their instructions make is seem easy but that is what scares me, seems too easy.

Should that Part # be 02_118_134? I can't find the 01_118_134 on their site. But it could just be me...

Here is the one I found. Got any suggestions on whom to order from?
