I have already removed old cable and as best as I can read from the old cable it looks like the number is SC13417 but it is very hard to read because most of it has rubbed off. I'm not sure what the size cable I should purchase. I know it's SC154xx. Any and all help with the size would be great. THANK YOU!

Should be 17' if that is the last two digits of the number that is stamped on the old one. I just replaced mine on my '01 21V and it had the same one in it originally. I upgraded to the SC15417 and WOW, what a difference the new cable makes. Took about 3 hours to install with some help and beer with a couple buddies. I ended up running it under the tank cause my boat never gets any water in the hull to worry about and it's an easier install that way.2001 21V Riders Edition - 08 F-150 King Ranch

2004 21i tight steering
OK, I ordered the ssc15417 steering cable. To remove the old cable I cut the cable just in front of the bolt that connects to the rudder as recommended by others on this site. Then I tied a string to the cable and pulled it through. The question I have now is, If I had to cut it to get it out HOW AM I GOING TO GET THE NEW CABLE BACK IN? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The best way to get the new cable in for this boat is to start by feeding the shaft part of the cable through the existing hole but push it towards the front of the boat and then use the string or rope that was used to pull the old cable out to pull the new cable to the back of the boat. I kept feeding the cable in until it only took a little bit of tugging on the rope to pull it back to the back of the boat. I also used a hose clamp to secure the rubber boot to the shaft sleeve. I think if the rubber boot slides off the shaft sleeve it will allow water to work its way into cable.Last edited by davidmamato; 09-13-2011, 07:16 PM.

You dont need to cut it to get it out. It just makes it easyer. If you have truble pushing the cable after about 2-3 ft , it is proably stuck under the center pylon bracket. I fought that for an hour befor I figured it out and then went " oh yea, that's the same place it got stuck last time." You have to reach way under the floor, feel for the cable, pull it back 2 inches and lift it over the bracket. Piece of cake after that.
