    Possible bent shaft

Hello everyone, Had my 22V for about 4 months and everything was going great. Went to drop into the lake last month and some one come flying in behind me at the dock. Tried to get out of the way and the bottom of the boat hit the dock. The fins and prop were waisted. I was able to remove the fins striaghten them and put them back on, they look new and seem to be fine. I also replaced the Prop, I propped down from 16 to 15, to try and save gas. Before putting the prop on I spun the shaft and it didnt look tweeked. I took the boat out last weekend and had a vibration not extreme but enought for me to notice.

I would love some advice. The shop cant get me in for three weeks and we have an event in two weeks.

    Thanks

I guess it only takes a little bend to make it vibrate, did the shaft support take ant kind of a hit??

It would take a fairly significant hit to bend a prop shaft as that is some pretty tough steel. And Tige's have some of the thickest prop shafts in the industry.

Remember that any inboard is going to vibrate some as the thrust from the prop is never inline with the direction of travel. Relative to the line of travel you have a higher pitch on the top of the propeller than you do on the bottom.

If you suspect the prop shaft is bent you can always get a guage that can read runout. Attach the device to the trailer and spin the prop while the probe is resting on the shaft. If the guage moves then the prop shaft is bent. How much puts it out of specification I have no idea.

You would have to do some significant damage to the prop before the shaft will suffer. The props are nibral and soft for a reason.

Now if the prop shaft impacted on the rocks rather than the prop it may very well be a different story.

Thanks for the responses. The propn shaft did not take a direct hit, I ended up with and ACME 837 prop, the original was and ACME 537. The device that I can check the straightness is ????????? I would love to know. How about the strut is there a way to check that for alignment.

              Thanks again

The device to check is a dial micrometer and is used in machine shops and automotive shops. It has a feeler that rests against the material to be checked. The dial is zeroed and the the piece to measured is moved. The better dial micrometers can detect a 10,000th of an inch and even the inexpensive ones can detect 1,000 on an inch.

Yes the prop support strut can be bent. That has to be checked by the dealer.

To tell if the strut is bent, look and see that if you were to pull the shaft out would the rudder be in the way.

You will need rudder and rudder box, prop, strut and prop shaft.

The rudder box is the brass bushing that the rudder slides into. I am not sure where you can buy these parts in your area.
