OK. so my starter went out a week ago. finaly got a new one today and put her in. I was also having issues with my dual battery to a solenoid setup which i still think isnt right but ill save that for another thread. Anyways i also changed my oil filter and fuel filter because i was experiencing some clogging issues and wasnt sure which was the culprit. So after getting everything changed and hooked up i decided to fire her up for a minute to make sure everything was running right. Of course it took a minute for the fuel filter to fill with fuel so it was a good 30 seconds of crank time until it started. let it run for about a minute with a couple revs. turned it off then went on to mess around with my stereo. my buddy asked for me to start the motor one more time to listen to one of my belt pullys to see if it was starting to grind. when trying to start the boat a second time the water pump wasnt wanting to turn on the pulley and starting making a LOUD squeeling noise so i quickly shut the boat down. He suggested that the remaining water that was still in the engine had depleted and now that there was no water it was causing the water pump to squeel and that once i put the boat in the water and get water running through the engine everything will be fine. I wont have time until thursday afternoon to drop it in the water to test his theory out so i wanted to get some ideas from you guys in the mean time. any ideas/suggestions?

So you didn't have the water hooked up to the boat when you ran it? That's a big no-no. You more than likely shredded your raw water pump impeller. Do not start it or try to run it on the water. Toy need to pull the housing apart and get all the little chunks of rubber out of there before you suck them up into the rest of the cooling system and cause more problems.

Then you are going to need to replace the impeller if not the whole unit. You can get either or. I would get the whole kit which includes the housing, wear plate and impeller. While you are at it, pick up a spare impeller to keep in the boat. It's an easy fix and the kit isn't very expensive. It is impossible to run without it. Also, get yourself a Fake-a-lake for running it on the trailer. Do not ever even turn it over without water running to it

damn...well i had multiple ppl tell me that you can run the motor long enough out of water to heat your oil up to change it...ppl that own boats...but i was leery to believe them...i guess now i know why...F@#% my boat has been out of commission for a a week already...maybe i can fix it all to get one more trip out of the season :/ i DO have a spare impeller though....but have no idea how to change that stuff or how to go about it....and i dont want to ask the guy that has been helping me because he is the one that told me to run it dry....geeessseee....FML

what exactly do i need to do to "pull the housing apart" to check and see what needs to be replaced. i havnt gone that deep in my motor yet and im not super mechanic smart. Ill prolly have to have my buddies help. but as long as i tell him what NOT to do he can be a good help. he just isnt a boat guy so when it comes to the marine side of an engine he isnt the sharpest tool in the shed. but neither am i as i am still learning all the ropes. So any detailed help can go a long ways for me. thanks in advance for anyone that can lend some advice

well after some search, i found the correct thread to show me how to replace my impeller and i also find a good website to go through for the parts, www.merccruiserparts.com. i guess this is what ill be tackling thursday :/

Atta boy. It's really easy. You just need to make sure you get the impeller set in the new housing in the correct rotation. The impeller itself has flexible veins. When you insert it into the new housing, you need to spin it in, meaning you need to twist in the direction that it is going to rotate when its on the motor as you push it in. Before you take the housing off the motor, make sure to take note of what direction it spins. Write it down, draw a picture, tattoo that chit on your hand, whatever, just get it. They can be a bitch to get in but, once you get it down, its easy. You're gonna do it every year so you might as well learn it. Your impeller is probably a sad little shredded nub in there so, you won't be able to tell what its supposed to look like when its in there. The veins will trail the hub as it spins around. As it spins, the inside of the housing is oblong and as the impellar gets sqeazed by that shape it forces water out of the outlet port of the housing and into the motor. If the veins are going the wrong direction when you install it, there's a chance the could break when you start it up. Then your dead in the water again.You'll get your chance, smart guy.

If you're having fuel issues, where are they stemming from? Obviously it runs but, how did that filter get clogged? How long did it sit before you bought it? If there is crap in the tank, it might need to be flushed. I seem to be the only one concerned about it but, its only because I battled "chit in the tank" for years with a friends boat. It was his fathers and it sat in the garage for 15+ years before we were old enough to get our hands on it. We ran the hell outa that thing in high school. 1974 Cobra Jet with a 427 Chevy and a 12J Berkeley. It was badazz. Anyways, every once in while, a chunk of old gas schmag would get sucked up into the pick up in the tank and we would have to pull the line off the tank and stick our lips the fitting and blow back into the tank to get it un-clogged. It always sucked when it was your turn to give the tank a blow job but it was always funny to watch your buddy do it and then get a mouth full of gas for his trouble. He made his girlfriend do it once. That poor girl was puking gas. Sigh... Those were good days. The eventual fix was a new tank. Worked perfect after that.

Well i got home from work/school today just as the sun was going down. Jumped in the boat and started tearing into it. After reading the tutorial i found on here on how to replace the impeller it seemed super easy and it was just that. got it taken apart in about 20 min and sure enough. The impeller was shreaded down to nubs almost all the way around! cleaned it all out. Examined the housing and cleaned it. slapped in the new impeller, put it all back together and tightened everything back up! took me about an hour and 15 min with a smoke break. Im hoping but am pretty sure that was my only problem. OF COURSE i didnt try to start it after putting it back together haha. Ill take it to the lake tomorrow after i get home from work/school and test her out. THANKS nicky for all your advice and help. You deffenantly lead me in the right direction. and big daddy...i dunno what i would do without your posts and imput Thanks again guys and thank you TO for always helping me when needed. Second on the fake a lake. Must have. Someone on here made one out of a plunger and hose fitting. That's basically all it is anyways.
No problem on the help out man. It would have been any number of people on here. I just got to it first. This site deserves the glory, not me. i was gonna try to make a fake fake-a-lake so to speak haha but just decided to go back it in the water and starter her on the trailer....spend a few minutes checking all my lines, hoses, fittings etc etc. the lake is only about 2 miles from me so its not that big of deal for me to drop it in the water to test her out. as the season is drawing to an end before to long, i think a winter project will be to set up a T connect in my water lines to be able to connect a water hose directly to it and get away from the whole fake-a-lake piece. im just waiting for the tutorial! who knows...maybe with the right advice before hand, ill right the tutorial! :P
