    ATFvs axle oil for Gearbox

    Hi All

I have a 2007 Tige RZ2. There are two dipsticks in the gearbox area. Both dipsticks have a red sign next to it marked ATF. My mechanic who was doing the service was used to servicing Mastercraft boats but not Tiges. The gear box can be found after removing the middle seat at the back. In the bottom dipstick, the mechanic filled it up with axle oil instead of Automatic Transmission Fluid. I thought it was odd and asked him about it. He said all Mastercrafts have the bottom dipstick on the gearbox filled with axle oil. I was not sure that this was the case for Tiges and was wondering if anyone knew the correct answer. I'm not sure my mechanic is right and I think the bottom dipstick should have been filled with automatic transmission fluid rather than axle oil

    Here are some photos

From the zf website: "ZF 45-IV Gearbox: 2 liters of oil in front, 1 liter of oil AFT. USE ONLY ATF OIL." Might be time to find a new mechanic, hypoid gear oil is a whole 'nother animal from ATF.

Also, did you ask him what that bright red sticker says? I'm new to reading so I can't figure it out, maybe he could help me...

Yup ended pumping out all the gear oil out myself rather than relying on a crap mechanic. Had to flush it a couple of times with ATF.

I wondered the same thing and asked Tige. Opposite of what you might think. Here is Harvey's reply along with my question:

Yes Marine Power changed it to 30 weight motor oil.

I bought my boat used and I am preparing it to take out. I was getting ready to do fluid changes. I have the ZF tranny and v drive. It says ATF only but it looks like there is a 30 weight oil in there instead. I have heard that at the factory the were putting 30 weight in instead of ATF to quite them down. Can this be confirmed? Should I drain it and put in ATF or go with what is in it? If not the ATF what should I be using?
          Thanks,
