    Sea water pump bearings shot

    2003 22v Merc 350 Mag Mpi engine
Was out on the lake yesterday and the boat overheated. Today I removed the sea water pump to find my 2 week old impeller (change it annually) in pieces and the bearings that hold the axle, pulley, and impeller destroyed.
I am thinking I will need to replace the pump but all the pumps seem to come without the pulley and it looks to be near impossible to remove the pulley and re attach it to the new pump. Any ideas? There is no bolt that holds the pulley on. Only reference I found in the archives was to buy the pump with pulley already attached which does not seem possible from my searches of a dozen parts sites.

Here is a link to a picture of the pump and pulley

You can rent a power steering pulley puller from AutoZone and it should do the trick.

Good idea on renting the puller, I am told you need a press to put the pulley on the new pump. I am going to see if the dealer will do it if I buy the new pump from them. If not I talked to a local Merc guy that said he had the tools needed. Has anyone tried rebuilding the pump? the parts needed are around $200 and a new pump is around $350. It seems like a new pump is the better way to go since it is hard to know for sure the condition of the brass and such on the pump that ate itself.

If it is like a ps pump, the center shaft should be threaded so it can be pulled on by a bolt. Just remember to put some light oil on the shaft before you start wrenching.

The link you have put up is to the newer Mercruiser raw water pump, 2005+. Your mercruiser part number should be 46-807151A9 with pulley attached (Super cheap at $338, so look around/price around) but if you are absolutely sure it's that one (will have a bronze impeller housing, not plastic and only $300) then that part number is 46-862914T10. They come as complete units without the bracket installed. SO, when you remove the old pump, take note of where the bracket lined up on the housing as this will geatly enhance your installation experience. Also, ALL the bolts on those housings are threaded into the opposite side...this means DO NOT TRY AND TORQUE THE BOLT HEADS AGAIN!!!! THE HOUSINGS ARE PLASTIC AND WILL BREAK VERY EASILY. Just throw on the nuts and torque to 15lb-ft. Good luck!

Picked up the new pump today and the dealer moved the pulley for me, which was awesome Will install in the morning and be back on the water this weekend. Thanks for all the help.

It is a 2003 all brass pump, Merc part # 46-862914T10 which did not include the pulley even though it is shown in most pictures.
