Pulley broke off and lost serpentine belt.....

We were out on Possum Kingdom Lake on Sat and had some problems. Cruising along when the Wife said the engine sounded louder. I do an immediate check of the gauges and see that the temp gauge is up to 200-205 range so I immediately go to neutral. This is when the alarm goes off so I shut down the engine and open the hatch to see what is wrong. First look the top pulley wheel on the starboard side is gone and the serpentine belt is in the bilge in one piece. I don't know how long it had been off.
I have the Merc 350 MAG MPI engine. It will crank for a few seconds(2-3) then stops so I don't think it is siezed. Just wondering what kind of internal damage I could have or is it as simple as replacing the pulley, mounting the serp belt and checking the timing and such???? Is the serp belt also the timing belt for the valves or is that internal??? I checked the oil and no water in it that I can tell, it may seem a little scorched but very fainly. Like I said the alarm didn't sound until I went to neutral and stopped and the engine ran until I shut it off with the key, all in a matter of a few seconds.
I know it is hard to diagnose from this but just want to know what expect. Thoughts.....

    Thanks

Its an easy fix. Since it didnt overheat I would simply replace the pulley and serpetine belt. It has nothing to do with the timimg or timing belt so you dont gotta worry about that. As long as it didnt overheat you dont gotta worry about internal damage. The serpentine belt simple turns the motor accessories(alt, water pump,etc..)
---v^---v^---v^_____---v^---v^ For a second there. I was bored to death!!

How many hours do you have on it?

In the past, did you notice any noise from the pulleys or has it always been quiet?

I have noticed a little noise coming from my pulleys for years but I thought that was normal. I once hit it with a lubricant spray and the noise stopped for a few seconds. I'm just wondering if there is any way to tell if it is going bad?

It is a 2004 and has only about 200 hours on it. There has been some noise from the pulleys but like you said I figured it was normal. I don't know how you would be able to predict a failure on one. Never seen it happen before.

Are there any telltale signs of overheating??? I know it got hot just don't know how hot. Like I said there was no alarm til I put it in neutral. Will the alarm go off no matter what when it reaches the preset temp?

        Thanks for the input.

??? I don't know either. I'm wondering how quiet it is when brand new. I would think any noise would signal that bearings are starting to go but mine have sounded like that for years. I just had the motor checked at the shop. I was there when they ran it. I'm guessing they would have said if something sounded wierd to them so maybe a little noise is normal???

You should be fine. A brief overtemp should not cause damage to your engine.

You probably lost the belt and pulley long before you realized it which caused a loss of electricity(i.e. no alternator) which drained your batteries. Without proper battery charge this will cause multiple hiccups with the engine.(i.e. injector issues, fuel pump issues...etc.)

Get a new belt and pulley and enjoy the rest of your summer!!!!!!!

            P.S....... And recharge those batteries!!!!
